Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Strassberg.
Hi Erika, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I studied event management in college & that’s where I began my career!
I loved it – got to travel the world, plan incredible events, and learned a TON. But after almost 8 years in the corporate scene, I decided to follow to entrepreneurial gut feeling. I always knew eventually I’d start my own business & be my own boss but never knew exactly what it’d be or how it’d play out.
I began to see these experiential concepts popping up all over the country, opening second, even third locations, and there wasn’t one in Denver. So I jumped at the opportunity to bring something special to Denver & fulfill my dreams!
Two birds – one stone as they say.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My motto throughout this journey has been: if it were easy, everyone would do it! So I always knew this adventure wouldn’t be without its challenges. I would say for me & my type of business, it’s been finding a balance between work & life.
When I had a 9-5, I would shut my laptop on Friday afternoon and have two days of uninterrupted personal time.
Now, it’s rare that I don’t work 7 days a week. I have been working on making sure to carve out time to recharge and enjoy free time with loved ones but it’s not as easy as it sounds.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Weathered Wick is Denver’s first custom candle creation experience.
We offer the ability for people to choose their vessel size, material, and color. Then blend their own scent combination. Our experience is unique because we don’t operate like a class. Instead of addressing the broader group, each appointment will have a dedicated staff member to assist & guide them along the way. This makes for a more intimate, high-end experience that our customers appreciate.
I am most proud of the vibe & community we’ve created. When you step through the doors of our studio, you feel welcome. And that was always my goal. I wanted to create a fun and unique place to come do something hands-on, but also that felt welcoming to literally everyone.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was the talkative, sassy, bossy little girl who knew exactly what she wanted & beat to the sound of her own drum. My parent’s favorite story to tell was when I was just two and in a dance recital, it was dead silent before the performance started, and before the curtain opened they just hear me say to the other girls “You need to get on your x!”
Leadership & entrepreneurship have just always been in my DNA. Am I scared when I take risks? Sure – but I back myself 100% and I will find a way to achieve what I set out to do.
