Hidden Gems: Meet Jorge Dominguez of Arepas House

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Dominguez.

Hi Jorge, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am originally from Venezuela and I came to the US back on 2014 as an asylum seeker while I fled political persecution from the current Venezuelan dictatorship.

On my first months in America, I made learning English my top priority because I knew it will be a fundamental resource to evolve in this country. After five months, when I felt confident to take some kind of classes, I went to the SBDC (Small Business Development Center) to learn about the American market and how to open a new business.

Since I didn’t have time to sell my properties when I left Venezuela, I had to be very smart on where and how I will spend the little money I got left so I wrote a master plan and that is how the idea of opening a Food truck began.

With a lot of effort, the support of my wife (which is an immigrant from Ukraine and active member of the US Air force) as well the support of my family and friends, I was able to take the brand “Arepas House” to the next level.

Due to the high success of our food truck, we were able to open our first restaurant back in November 2019 and currently exploring options for a second location.

It wasn’t easy AT ALL, hours and hour and a looooooot of hours of work and dedication but now I’m leaving my American Dream with my wife and my new two babies Ella and Evan (twins). God Bless America!!!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I could spent days telling you all the hardship of running a food truck. In a simple word, it was VERY THOUGH

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are the first authentic Venezuelan owned restaurant in Denver. Offering fresh and delicious gluten-free menu.

Our menu has been designed to accomplish a perfect balance between the Venezuelan traditions and the American customs.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I believe our Instagram account is a good summary of the long road we have been through!!!
