Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Tatum
Hi Stephanie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey to where I am today has been shaped by both my childhood and adult experiences. Growing up in the foster care system and moving from home to home, I lacked the stability I needed to feel secure and grounded. Those early experiences taught me how to stand in my power and the importance of having a safe and nurturing environment—something I am passionate about providing for others in my counseling practice.
Adulthood brought a series of losses and disappointments that deeply impacted me. Relationship challenges, career setbacks, and personal struggles tested my resolve and created moments of hesitation when stepping into new opportunities. However, I have also experienced many successes in my adulthood. These achievements have affirmed my purpose and given me the confidence to keep moving forward, even in the face of challenges. These experiences—both the trials and the triumphs—have immensely shaped how I approach my work and support others. They have taught me the importance of empathy, compassion, and holding space for individuals as they navigate their personal struggles and celebrate their significant wins.
I draw deep inspiration from the legacy of my ancestors, whose strength and entrepreneurial spirit remind me of my power to overcome challenges and build a purposeful life. Their legacy, combined with the unwavering prayers of my granny, daddy, self-adopted parents, and loved ones, laid the foundation for the faith I carry today—a faith that sustains me, fuels my confidence, and empowers me to take bold steps toward my goals.
Speaking of my faith, I close by sharing that my vision for Still I Rise Counseling Services is deeply rooted in my unwavering belief. My faith is not just a source of strength—it is the cornerstone of my confidence, the foundation of my overcoming spirit, and the force that empowers me to dream big, work hard, and accomplish the seemingly impossible.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has not been linear or easy, but it has been filled with growth, self-discovery, and the understanding that even in moments of loss, there is potential for healing and transformation. Along the way, I’ve faced several obstacles, particularly in the areas of resources and self-doubt.
As a Black woman, accessing resources—especially financial ones—is not easy for the BIPOC community. Finding and researching what is available can be challenging and incredibly rewarding when those resources are uncovered. However, my experience has also shown me that there is a significant need for improving access to resources within BIPOC communities, and this realization has further fueled my passion to advocate for equity and opportunity.
Another major challenge I have faced is overcoming self-doubt, which stemmed from childhood experiences. Developing belief in my abilities became critical to pushing me forward. Today, I understand how important it is to nurture self-confidence and trust in my purpose, even when the path feels uncertain.
These challenges—access to resources and overcoming self-doubt—have shaped my journey and taught me valuable lessons about resilience, persistence, and self-belief. They have also deepened my commitment to creating a space where others can access the tools and support they need to heal.
As you know, we’re big fans of Still I Rise Counseling Services. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Still I Rise Counseling Services is a growing mental health practice dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive space for individuals, couples, families, and teens. In December 2024, I proudly expanded our team to include skilled therapists committed to meeting the diverse needs of our clients. Additionally, we now offer clinical supervision for provisionally licensed therapists and interns, fostering the growth of future mental health professionals.
Our therapists specialize in supporting clients navigating a variety of challenges, including trauma healing, military and family dynamics, depression, anxiety, grief, substance use disorders, and relationship issues. We are deeply committed to addressing racial trauma and intergenerational wounds, creating a space where healing and empowerment can take root.
Guided by a commitment to equity and inclusion, we approach therapy through an anti-oppressive lens. This framework recognizes the systemic barriers and lived experiences that impact mental health, ensuring that every client’s story and cultural identity are honored and respected. Our trauma-informed care model emphasizes safety, authenticity, and growth, empowering clients to overcome obstacles and embrace their strengths.
As we continue to grow, our focus remains on providing high-quality care to clients, helping them heal, grow, and rise above life’s challenges with the support of our exceptional team of therapists.
