Inspiring Conversations with Veronica Walton of Veronica Walton Therapy, PLLC.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronica Walton.

Veronica Walton

Hi Veronica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve had the dream of being a therapist since I was young. Unfortunately, the dream originated from a place of trauma and loneliness when I was in elementary and middle school. Back then, though, it was less about being a therapist and more about being there for others in the ways I always craved adults could have been there for me. Then, in AP Psychology in high school, the more academic interest in the profession began. From there I started down the career path of becoming a therapist. Early on I was convinced I would become a therapist specializing in working with kids, teens, and family therapy. The idea of being the adult I wish I had had when I was young showed up in a very literal way at the start of my journey. But as I got into actually seeing clients, I discovered a really strong passion for couples therapy and trauma therapy. There was and continues to be so much resilience I see in clients; their ability to bounce back from unimaginable hardship is impressive and connecting. I started to see the power of relationships, both from a place of pain and harm, as well as the power of their healing potential. There’s two sides to everything, and working in the trauma and relationship space, you can really see how connection can be the thing that can tear you down, as well as such a source of strength and safety.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In some ways it’s been very smooth. I’ve not ever seriously considered a different path for my professional life. Of course, when I was young I had dreams of being a cowgirl and interior designer, but once I actually began exploring my long-term future, therapy has always been first. There have been some experiences that have changed the specific type of therapy I believed I would do one day. For instance, my first clinical experience was working at a crisis center in Montana during undergrad. I really thrived in this fast-paced, high acuity environment and could see how I could work as a therapist in this setting long-term. The work could be taxing, but was also really enriching and variable which I enjoyed. It was also very meaningful to me to be part of the support team for those who were marginalized and under resourced. This passion quickly took a left turn when I was attacked with a knife and held hostage by a client. Another client helped me out of this incident, but this experience became one that shifted the direction of my professional trajectory immediately. I’m happy where I find myself today, and know all experiences – good and bad – are part of me standing here now. However, it’s also important to appreciate the process and the difficulty of what we all have to overcome to get where we are now.

As you know, we’re big fans of Veronica Walton Therapy, PLLC.. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My practice is founded on a social justice, feminist, systemic, and trauma-informed lens. I work with adults within the state of Colorado, both in person and virtually, to foster conscious and secure relationships with others and with themselves. I primarily focus on couples therapy, premarital therapy, dating issues, trauma, attachment issues, queer topics, identity and sexuality exploration, and family of origin wounds. My primary theoretical approaches include: EMDR, IFS, attachment theory, ACT, Gottman, EFT, psychodynamic, and mindfulness. I am most proud of the foundation of values and ethics my business stands on. Because of my feminist and social justice values I am often exploring the dynamic of power and privilege in the systems people are engaged in. This allows for a much more wholistic and integrated process of therapy that allows clients to feel fully seen, even in the invisible intersection of identities that inform their experiences.
My office is located in the Nurture Wellcare Marketplace building. I offer in person services on Mondays and Tuesdays, and also have virtual availability Monday-Thursday.
I also offer supervision for pre-licensed therapists after grad school who are interested in deepening their skills in couples therapy and individual therapy.

What’s next?
– I am in the process of developing courses! These courses will be available for purchase on my website. They are therapy-informed resources for people who either aren’t able or ready yet to begin therapy but are still in need of support, or couples who have been in therapy before but need a little refresher with conflict and connection practices that can promote health and wellness in their relationship. – I am in the process of receiving certification as an AAMFT Approved Supervisor and am taking on new supervisees pursuing MFT licensure.
