We recently had the chance to connect with Meredith Cameron and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Meredith, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
People often believe that if they meditate, then they need to let go of the life they are currently living. But instead, the type of meditation I teach – Vedic Meditation – naturally and spontaneously allows your life to become more robust and dynamic and those things that aren’t aligned for you effortlessly fall away because you feel more you. There are so many misconceptions around meditation as well, as many think it’s just another “self care bubble bath”. When in actuality, consistent meditation practice is an absolute necessity for nervous system health. Each day, we live, breathe and be through the perception of our nervous system and if we are tired and stressed, that is how we respond to the world.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I teach Vedic Meditation, an easy + effortless transcending technique that stands apart from all others due to the type of brain waves that are accessed by using a personalized mantra. I have done many things over the years, from traveling the world and teaching yoga workshops and retreats, reading Akashic Records and teaching deep somatic mentorships online and for me, Vedic Meditation is the root of all roots. It allows you to experience deep rest, 3-5 times deeper rest than sleep, scientifically proven and because of this, you are then able to feel anchored and rested even amidst daily life. When you often feel rested on the inside and life is still extremely busy, things feel lighter and more enjoyable. It is a slow road to become a Vedic teacher, it took me almost 7 years, as this tradition requires that you embody the wisdom fully and this is why I tapped into teaching so many other things while I was on the journey to becoming a Vedic meditation teacher. This is a 4 day in-person course and it is so special to be in person and build conscious community. This world is craving more depth, more authenticity and more connection so to be in person feels really nourishing and supportive. I am currently phasing out what I used to do (Akashic Records, somatic mentorships) and focusing solely on teaching Vedic Meditation to as many people as possible. There are so many scientific studies to back up this technique, but my favorite is a study that showed when 1% of a community uses this exact meditation technique, crime rates decrease, suicide incidents go down, hospitalizations are less and the overall well-being of the community increases. So I guess I’d say I’m on a mission to tip the scales for this planet and teach as many people as possible to reach 1% of the entire globe.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I started a “club” when I was little and I called it FACE (For a Cleaner Earth) and I was determined to help the earth as much as I could. I would collect pop cans from my neighborhood because in Michigan you would get back 10 cents for each can and then I would donate it to the local animal shelter or to earth organizations like the World Wildlife Fund (and others). I would write letters to all of the organizations and they would send me posters and I would hang them in our basement, as if it was my office. I literally felt like I was changing the world and had momentum behind my back.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
I would say my health crisis taught me how to heal nearly anything. For years, I was losing strength and my joints were aching so badly. I was told I had lyme disease and we were treating it for years, but I only kept getting weaker, losing weight, and becoming more and more stuck in my body to the point that I could no longer lift my hand to my mouth to feed myself, I couldn’t open doors or hardly use my hands, I couldn’t get dressed on my own. My husband became my caregiver. This lasted for over a year until we found out that I was misdiagnosed and I instead had rheumatoid arthritis, yet when you don’t treat it, it causes an avalanche of other problems, so I felt plagued with non-stop ailments and was always in a puddle of defeat. It wasn’t until one day, I heard a message shoot through me that said I could either kill myself or I could meditate more often and accept the moment as it was. Would I ever walk again? I didn’t know and I started to play with being ok with exactly that. It was in that acceptance of not knowing what the future held and not having clear medical answers that everything began to shift for me. It was as if I became more spacious in the mind and body, and this alone allowed me to be completely accepting of everything, inside and out. This felt like freedom, even though I was still stuck in my body. It proved to me that connecting to our inner world and letting that drive the bus, versus our outer circumstances and I started to apply it to my entire life.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely. It is of absolute importance to me that I walk my talk and be honest and real. In fact, it’s one of the biggest pieces of feedback I often receive after teaching a yoga retreat or a meditation course: “you’re just so real”.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I didn’t leave one ounce of untapped potential on the table, ever. I believe, as humans, we have so many super powers, so much say in how we direct our energy and attention, that I want to use it and play with it daily. I care so much about humanity and how to shift collective consciousness and I know that to have this impact, we must dig into all of the potential we have access to, on an energetic level, as humans.
