We recently had the chance to connect with Sage Helperman and have shared our conversation below.
Sage , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
Some people ask “why be an artist?” it barely pays or doesn’t pay at all”. For us who are passionate about art, the money does not ultimately matter. What matters, is that you are fulfilling your creative itch. Money is an extra helpful bonus on top of that if it happens.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve been live painting and exhibiting art for over 10 years. I do art at a variety of music concerts, festivals, gallery receptions, and other events all over Colorado and occasionally beyond. In addition, I am also a rhythm guitar player and singer, cartoonist, writer, photographer, hobbyist videographer, and snowboarder.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship with myself is ultimately how I have shaped my world around me. Like they say, you cannot love others unless you love yourself. Sometimes, you must do the deep inner shadow work to figure out who you are, light and dark, yin and yang, all that jazz.
Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
The cool computer games that used to be on LEGOs website in the late 90’s/early 2000’s. I’m an AOL-era type nostalgic person.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. 100 percent. Since I meet most of my fans in face-to-face interactions at shows and other events, people can truly see who I am while also seeing the artwork made before their eyes. You should always be authentic to yourself even if your art persona is not exactly representative of you as person in the day-to-day life.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m gliding down a mountain on a snowboard, most likely. I would also say that when I’m live painting at a concert and the synergy between the music, band, crowd, myself, and the art on the canvas all blend together. That is a cool feeling.
