Today we’d like to introduce you to Abrean SophiaMarie and DJ.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Abrean and DJ. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
DJ and I met about four years ago during my time as a student at the Aveda Institute in Denver. We stayed connected through the years as we established ourselves in the Denver hair community.

DJ opened BEE Sweet in the Rino neighborhood in 2017. After cutting hair in a barbershop for a couple of years, I was ready to be in a space where I could provide for my clients, comfortably and happily.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc .– but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m so charmed to be where I am at BEE Sweet and have so many wonderful people and moments to be grateful for.

The road was and still is, challenging and difficult.

I think what’s most important when starting any new job or career, especially as a young woman, is prioritizing your safety and boundaries. You deserve to feel visible, respected, supported and accepted. It’s up to you to decide if a work environment is a place in which you can learn and grow.

There is so much to learn in this exciting industry and many people within the community. Many people cultivate many perspectives.

I find it valuable to focus on your intentions and seek to share those intentions with the people to look up to and learn from.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
Big or small, there will always be barriers. How we navigate them, however, is what truly matters.

When female leadership is still undermined, we need to encourage one another. I think it can be easy to feel insecure, jealous, and intimidated by the success of others. Let’s focus on being inspired and supportive!
