Life & Work with Alex Kaminsky of Highlands Ranch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Kaminsky.

Hi Alex, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was very active and played sports. I was not overweight. But after I stopped playing competitive basketball, went to college, and got into the workforce, I kept eating the same amount of food and didn’t work out as much. In 2017, I started my first desk job—and the office life got to me. I sat all day and ate out for every single meal. I gained over 150 pounds in less than two years. At 22, I hit my heaviest weight of 330 pounds. I just felt so horrible all the time. I slept poorly, had no energy, was always lethargic, and just felt sluggish.

As a 22-year-old, I would think to myself. This is not how it should be. This is not the life I want to live. My turning point came on November 21, 2018, while reading a book about being successful in business. The author kept coming back to how they started the day off by hitting the gym and how you had to make taking care of yourself your number one priority. I set myself up for a workout with a personal trainer the very next morning. I had wanted to change for a while prior to that, but I kept giving it only half of my effort. Nothing ever stuck for more than a couple of days, but this time I was determined. After first getting back into gear with my exercise routine, I also decided to embark on a new nutrition journey. A friend recommended taking my nutrition one step further after Whole30 by going plant-based, and I haven’t looked back. I eat a mostly plant-based diet about 90 percent of the time. Eating primarily plant-based makes me feel amazing—I have so much energy, sleep great, and my athletic endurance has skyrocketed. I also never feel bogged down or overly full. I don’t track calories or macros. I feel my body as much as it needs whole amazing foods.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not easy at all. For the first year that I started trying to lose weight, I only lost about 30 pounds. I struggled to figure out the nutrition side of it. I worked out so hard but wasn’t making the progress I wanted because I wasn’t fueling myself properly. Though frustrating, I kept on pushing and didn’t ever give up! I just kept going and adjusting and trying new things.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My sister and I started sharing our weight loss journey across our social media pages. We found so much support from everyone, but we also found how relatable it is. A lot of people are struggling or trying to make better choices with their health and what we were sharing was resonating. We started a YouTube channel a couple of years ago to create vlogs and fun videos. Still, once everyone started asking us so many questions, so we decided to start making videos about our weight loss journey! Our mantra is GET REAL! The REAL comes from combining our names (Reana and Alex – RE and AL, REAL!) And our goal is always to keep it real and be 100% genuine and authentic with our friends and family. Through all the ups and downs! We aren’t trying to show off the good just for social media.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love that there is so much to do right in our backyard! Biking, hiking, walking, golfing, concerts, mountains, and more! I love that most people in Denver are so active and live a healthy lifestyle. That’s also my least favorite part! Sometimes it feels like there is TOO much to do, and how will I ever get to experience it all??
