Life & Work with Amy Ronk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Ronk.

Hi Amy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello! I’ve been taking photos for as long as I can remember. I’ve always had a creative mind. Unfortunately, my creativity has never been easily translated through most traditional art forms. Photography has always been the only medium where I feel I can communicate my point of view. My creative vision is actually translated in a way that someone other than me can understand!

It’s always been a massive part of my life, but in 2017, I finally quit my full-time job and decided to go to photography school at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula, MT. After nine months of long days in the studio, endless information, and being taught by some of the most talented photographers I’ve ever met, I graduated in 2018. I decided to move to Denver to build my business!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not always been a smooth road! Up until this year, my biggest issue had been my inability to “chose a genre.” When you love everything, how do you chose just one thing?! Landscape and fine art photography is a huge part of who I am fundamentally, and I feel as though people who see those photos, and feel what I felt, have a window into my soul. Portrait photography snuck up on me- I never thought I would be shooting weddings, but it has become one of my favorite things in the world! This year specifically has been really challenging. Like so many others, my business has definitely been negatively affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. It has been a tough road, but I am so hopeful that we will get through this difficult time and band together to move forward.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I like to think I specialize in many things!

My passion for photography began with nature and landscapes, and that will forever be one of my favorite things to document. I specifically fell in love with waterfalls. There’s something so magical about a long exposure. I love that I can take 500 photos of one waterfall, and because the water is constantly changing and moving, no two images will ever be the same. I take pride in my ability to photograph a landscape someone thinks they’ve seen a million times, and turn it into something intricate and unrecognizable. I sell fine art prints of all of my nature photography. Being able to sell those prints has been essential to keeping my business alive during Covid-19.

The other half of my business is centered around weddings, engagements, and elopements. It is one of the most amazing and beautiful things that everyone you love is in one place, celebrating your love, and I’m always flattered and honored to be able to share that with my you!

Another huge passion of mine is pet photography! Prior to starting my photography business, I worked in the pet industry for ten years. The interaction and connection between animals and their owners is so special and one of my favorite things to witness, and capture. So as you can see, I’m a little all over the place! I’ve always been this way, and I think it ultimately sets me apart!

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is finding balance, knowing who you are, and knowing what’s right for you. It’s unrealistic to love every aspect of what you do, but as long as the good is outweighing the bad, I consider my life successful. I’ve worked in places that have not been a good fit for me, and I vowed to never put myself in that situation again. I think everyone figures these things out about themselves at their own pace, and I’m extremely lucky to have had these experiences and realizations earlier in my life.
