Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashlee Burke.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ashlee. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
For my first Mother’s day after my son, Sadler was born, my husband gave me the gift of a photo class with two local photographers called Photocamp. The class was intended to help moms learn to use their DSLR camera. During the chaotic and exhausting newborn stage, It felt so good have this artistic outlet. I started taking my camera with me everywhere. It became more than just a way to document precious moments with my son. The way I saw the world, how light could frame an image, how momentary emotion could be distilled and captured … it made the daily grind feel different and exciting. I truly fell in love with photography when I realized the power that is held within a photograph.
Has it been a smooth road?
Let’s be real, starting a business is always scary, but putting yourself and your creative vision out into an already saturated market is terrifying. In the beginning, my biggest struggle was comparing myself to my colleagues and questioning my developing style. However, I soon realized was there is space for every one of us. Each of us has a different eye, varied editing styles and a unique personal story that informs our art. By avoiding the pitfalls of comparison, I began to carve out my own niche and understand the unique value that I could offer my clients. I advise you to seek connection in your images, but also in your own career journey. I am part of an amazing group of women photographers who seek comradery over competition. We have created a safe space to learn and support each other’s business development. So my advice is: Be brave and take risks, there is a space and a need for everyone. Find people who offer support and create a safe space to grow together with those people. Don’t compare yourself; It’s a slippery slope.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Ashlee Burke Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
When you call to schedule a session with me, I understand that this season in your life matters. I know from my own experience as a mother and a daughter that there will never be another stage quite like this one. Time passes quickly, but truly inspired photographs force us to stand still in the present moment. That moment is where I’ve found my calling. I can capture a sideways glance, a loving tussle, a bubbled-up laugh. My clients tell me that I make them feel safe and comfortable and they often forget they are being documented. My sessions are always playful and full of laughter. There is no pressure to get the right shot because the right shot is whatever is real between you and your loved ones. I will find that real moment, that authentic exchange and capture it for you to treasure and revisit forever.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Mentors are AMAZING! I have been extremely lucky to work with several mentors that have helped me grow as a photographer and business owner. I recommend reaching out to a photographer you admire or follow on social media and start a conversation. Don’t be shy! The coolest thing about photography is there is always something new to learn or try. And you’ll be amazed by how many awesome women are out there who want to help other women entrepreneurs find their voice and achieve success. Workshops are another great way to connect. I try to attend once a year, not only for inspiration and new techniques but also to connect with other creatives in a small group setting. Each time, I’ve walked out with some really great new friends and a network of fantastic, like-minded photographers.
