Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashleigh Roybal.
Ashleigh, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started working on my cosmetology license the fall after I graduated high school. I graduated from Empire Beauty School Littleton and am so grateful for all the teachers and administrators there that encouraged me to finish.
After I got licensed, I struggled with building a clientele and with that I lost my love of the industry. I left the salon and worked at a Chiropractic office for about a year to get back on my feet. During this time, I stayed in touch with my regular clientele. A dear friend I went to school with introducing me to eyelash extensions and I immediately got hooked.
I worked for a lash company for about a year and strengthened my technique. In the last few months, I was at the lash company, I decided I wanted to build my own brand and be more independent. So, I used my biggest paycheck and bought all the supplies I’d need to start. I jumped and opened my own business. There was a listing online for booth renting a bed at a business suite to do lashes.
I’m currently still at that same suite and I’m absolutely loving it. The other girls in the suite with me are all independent business owners as well and they inspire me so much. I’ve grown and built a clientele that has tripled my income in less than six months. With this, I decided to go back to doing hair two days a week at a salon in Arvada.
My clients truly have brought back my love for cosmetology. It’s nice to come into work everyday and create art with my client’s hair and lashes.
The biggest piece of advice I can offer; if you have a dream, jump for it. It could be just a lesson or it could be life-changing.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has had its struggles, the biggest being how long it took me to get through school. My year-long journey turned into a three-year venture due to two cosmetology school closures.
My advice is to keep on pushing for your goals. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. My husband has been my biggest supporter and I think I would’ve given up if I hadn’t had his support.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Beauty by AshleighO – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I currently specialize in eyelash extensions and vibrant hair color. I also offer basic eyebrow waxing, makeup services and other hair services.
My clients make my day. I love talking with people and sharing ideas. My clients keep my business going. So, the thing I’m most proud of definitely has been finding the clients I have. I’ve built friendships and love making my clients happy with their lashes and hair. The best feeling is when one of my clients takes selfies with her new lashes/hair/makeup and posts it on social media. That alone is a huge compliment but also makes me so happy to have gotten the opportunity to make another woman feel confident and beautiful in her skin.
I think the thing that sets me apart from others is that I keep striving to learn more and bring new services to my business. An example would be; this last week I started offering glitter lashes. I’m also starting the process of learning how to do Japanese Hair Straightening.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
The biggest barrier, I feel, was just getting started with a business. I know a few of my fellow cosmetology friends want to go on their own as well but don’t know where to start. The fear of giving up a consistent paycheck is definitely intimidating.
The thing I know though is that my friends are also so skilled and talented that they’d grow so quickly. So many of my friends have beautiful personalities and that alone is a big reason why clients continue going to a stylist.
In conclusion, I feel if women knew how to get started in their business it wouldn’t be as intimidating. There’s really no guideline for step by step how to open a business. The fear of possible failure shouldn’t be what keeps you from your dream.
