Life and Work with Cassie Sheets

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassie Sheets.

Cassie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?  My career started out like most who grew up in middle-class America. I obtained a 4-year degree from a well-regarded university, then worked diligently to climb the corporate ladder, achieving an above average level of success. After more than a decade of “working for the man”, it became clear that no matter how hard I worked, the glass ceiling loomed above. Due to an increasing interest in real estate investment as a means of passive income, and the desire to chart my own career path, I made the leap into self-employment as a residential real estate appraiser. After appraising for friends & colleagues, I made the decision to add real estate broker to my resume. The next step was fixing & flipping a 3-unit property, which then allowed me to buy an investment property in the mountains.  The journey took considerably longer than expected but staying the course is finally reaping rewards.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?  I transitioned into self-employment in 2007, and the timing of that move was the #1 struggle I faced!  The sub-prime lending market was headed for a downturn and a recession was close behind it.  Appraisers were the hardest hit in the industry, especially a new one with a required lengthy apprenticeship ahead. Persistence through that painful market downturn at the start my career eventually paid off.  I now have a solid client based on personal referrals, and the experience & confidence to expand my investing ambitions into new markets.

Please tell us about CBS Real Estate.
CBS Real Estate incorporates all aspects of my real estate pursuits: helping clients buy & sell, fixing & flipping, and long-term real income investment holds.  Since resourcefulness is a strong personality trait of mine, I find “househacking” a natural fit. Househacking is a must in Colorado due to rapidly rising real estate prices!  I stress having a “Plan B” when investing. It’s great to buy a home now to live in & enjoy – but what can it do for you in 10, 20, or 30 years from now?

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I feel like women are well-positioned for any & all opportunities they’re interested in pursuing.  A significant obstacle I see with women is more of a mentality issue vs. a legitimate issue.  Erroneously thinking that male counterparts are more suited to leadership or advising on financial matters is a ridiculous reason to fall short! As society continues to evolve, that prehistoric thinking is lessening, thank goodness.  I love helping anyone, but women who are interested in building a real estate portfolio, is what I love to do most!
