Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassy Brule.
Cassy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey started back when I had my four-year eating disorder with anorexia. Between my junior year of high school and junior year of college, I struggled with confidence, self-love, and understanding of who I am. I used the lack of food to gain some type of control in my life. I would run for 6 to 9 miles a day in the country just to clear my head. This did not help with my eating disorder.
Junior year of college I started taking an interest in fitness and nutrition. My passion began with me trying to control my eating disorder. I wanted to learn how to work out and eat to lose weight. Little did I know it would have a different effect on me. I fell in love with learning how to nourish and care for my body. I started to take all health and fitness classes I could. In 2014 I took part in my first NPC Bikini competition. I did not place, but I was fascinated with how our bodies are affected by a specific intake of nutrition matched with workouts.
Even though my Bachelor’s degree was in Paralegal, my interest in fitness continued to grow. I participated in bikini competitions where I eventually placed.
While I was obtaining my Master’s degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotions, the effects of my eating disorder started to set in. My metabolism tanked, I couldn’t sleep, I was gaining weight and my brain was constantly in a fog. I was in the middle of my Masters, working full time as a Paralegal, training for a competition and planning my wedding… I was a little stressed out. I took a break from competitions and turned my focus to getting my health back on track. I learned how specific foods contain nutrients that our body needs to properly function and stay healthy.
After receiving my Master’s degree I worked at a few different gyms and an online startup company. Even though I loved educating and working with my clients, I was never 100% happy in these places. I had managers and coworkers who didn’t believe me, there was a lack of communication and I couldn’t be who I wanted to be.
In the fall of 2018, I had the idea of creating my own blog, Squats and Stilettos. I wanted to create something that could help individuals feel confident and healthy inside and out. My love of fitness, fashion and educating others are the fundamental principles of Squats and Stilettos. It has been difficult to build something from the ground up, but it has been worth it. I am able to be me and help others.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not always been a smooth road. When I started Squats and Stilettos, I was working two jobs while my husband was between jobs. It was not the ideal time to start a blog, but I knew there wasn’t really a perfect time to start anything. You just need to believe in yourself and go for it. I would work on my blog every chance I could; evenings, between jobs, and weekends. My husband would take my photos, proofread my posts and help research questions I had. I was teaching myself how to create and run a blog. There were long nights, days of frustrations, celebrations, and constant self-motivation.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Squats and Stilettos – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I love Squats and Stilettos because it lets me share my love of education, nutrition, fitness, and fashion. When I first started my fitness journey, I would try to get my hands on any information I could. I would constantly look up healthy recipes, different kinds of workouts and how to feel confident in my own skin. At Squats and Stilettos, I share all of that. I post information about workouts, recipes, nutrition facts, my favorite styles and more.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I love meditation. It really helps me clear my mind, relax and see things from a different perspective. I meditate about five times a week.
