Life and Work with Connie Carson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Connie Carson.

Connie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Feisty Fit Females is a two-hour, free event for women cancer survivors that has met monthly for over a decade. We usually meet the last Thursday of each month, except in November and December when the holidays interfere with our schedule. We meet at the home of the founder, Dr. Connie Carson, who lives at 1341 West Caley Avenue in Littleton, CO.

Speakers have included medical oncologists, Drs. Madeleine Kane, Dev Paul, and Sami Diab. Most recently, Sarah Thomas told of her epic swim across the English Channel, four times… a feat never before accomplished. We’ve met in the teepee in my back yard, put Tibetian vibration bowls on our heads, carved pumpkins, engaged in laughter therapy, and shared our journeys with one another. An actual fitness regimen does not always happen; however we have done yoga and Essentrics (classical stretching) as well as ballet.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing that deals with cancer is a smooth road. People have attended the evening following their appointment with their medical oncologist, where they learned they had metastatic disease. Because we’ve met for over a decade, some of the members no longer attend either because they are too sick or they no longer are with us.

Mainly, I’d like to stress that this is not your usual support group. We don’t begin by talking about illness. If it comes up, we appropriately address it but hopefully, I as the facilitator, am able to help the women see that they are far more than a cancer survivor. I like to have them think about topics like, “What brings you joy?”, “”What gives you peace and makes the journey to health possible for you? “How do you approach the understandable fears of waiting for new diagnostic test results?” “How can you get to sleep when you are worried?” and mainly, How can a focus on wellness bring about peace in your life?”

So, as you know, we’re impressed with FEISTY FIT FEMALES – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
For fourteen years, I acted as a healthcare consultant and website content author to the oncology division of Nashville-based HCA, one of our nation’s leading providers of healthcare services. During that time, I authored ten books and numerous articles on cancer and the importance of exercise as a vital treatment option. The third edition of my book, Fitness for Cancer Patients, will soon be available on Amazon; however, I have given away literally thousands of copies. For a complimentary copy, contact me at concarson1@gmail.com.

My volunteer activities are extensive. Currently, I am the President of the Board of Directors for Colorado Wild Women, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women of all fitness levels train for triathlon events (teamcww.org). My personal passion lies in helping women cancer survivors to become more physically fit. That’s why Feisty Fit Females continues to be such a vital part of my life, after more than a decade. For more information, contact Connie Carson at 720-635-3823 or send an email to concarson1@gmail.com

The third edition of my book will be available, hopefully by the end of this month. A digital as well as a hard copy will easily be provided.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
What helps me do my best in life?

I’m an open water swimmer…. not anywhere near the level of Sarah Thomas but I love to swim in the ocean, in lakes …. wherever I possibly can. That’s a simple answer.

On a more serious note, I know that I could not do this type of work were it not for the incredibly strong women cancer survivors I have met during my experience of working with people with this disease. They give me strength, comfort, and the desire to keep hosting Feisty Fit Females.
