Life and Work with Danielle Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Smith.

Danielle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began my photography journey as a way to capture moments of my children; my very first camera was gifted to me by my sister. After a few fun sessions with my kids, I fell in love with the chance at getting to freeze moments in time, edit them to show what my eyes see, and share those images with those I love. From there, word of mouth was my rocket booster and friends were my fuel, encouraging me, teaching me, and helping me get more experience. I have always been an artist and lover of the arts. I was a dancer and musician since I was walking but never dreamed that I would find such a passion and a natural talent for photography until I tried it. Today, I hope to continue to grow in my craft and create a successful career.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t always smooth. I had to learn that Photography is more than just the art and had to really learn the good and the bad in the business of it. There were moments of self-doubt, criticism and lots of competition. My advice for other women in the photography business or any other business is to never let your belief in yourself be drowned out by competition and to keep in mind that you are always growing and learning. If you have a passion and a drive for something, it won’t be easy, but success is definitely within reach.

Please tell us about Lotus & Lilly Photography.
My heart is in shooting couples, engagements, and weddings because of my love for love, but I have been branching out and shooting a wide variety of sessions especially in the offseason. I currently offer everything from newborn and maternity sessions to branding and product photography sessions. I am proud that the people I shoot for genuinely love their photos and always share my business with those around them. My primary resource is word of mouth and that is a great feeling. I think my style and versatility set me apart the most.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Growing up in a matriarchal family and being raised by entrepreneurs definitely set me up for success. My Grandmother made a way for her children with her gift as a seamstress and I grew up watching my mother and father raise four children while taking care of two businesses of their own. I learned from them to use my passion and talents to create a living for myself that no one could take away from me.
