Life and Work with Desiree Geraldine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Geraldine.

Desiree, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
People have always asked me, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” My answer evolved from wanting to be an archeologist to a psychologist to finally… an actress. As a 10-year-old, I began studying the craft by researching my favorite actors and actresses. My sister and I would reenact scenes from TV shows and movies for fun. We even filmed our own version of a scene from Lord of the Rings. As time went on, I became fully involved with the art by taking theater classes in my senior year of high school and all throughout college. Today, I can call myself a writer, director, and an actress as I have written a web series directed a play and starred in several short films. I have now booked the role of my dreams in an upcoming major feature film with a couple of legendary actors. At the beginning of 2019, I promised myself that this year would be a year that would be full of positive results. Just when I wanted to throw in the towel, this wonderful opportunity came along out of nowhere. Welcome to the process and journey of a 27-year-old actress.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Everyone’s journey is different, however, most actors and actresses know firsthand just how tough the industry can be at times. You will hear a lot of no’s before you finally hear a yes. You definitely have your ups and downs as an artist. You will wonder why you weren’t good enough for a particular role or why you haven’t achieved your own version of success. I often struggled with patience as I constantly felt stuck in this routine of working a 9 to 5 and coming home to watch a show that I could see myself on. It was tough to train my mindset to believe that something great was on the way.

My advice to anyone who is pursuing a career in the industry is to embrace the emotions that you will feel throughout the journey. It’s ok to not be ok but find a way to pick yourself up and continue to work towards your goals. Every little thing counts and doesn’t forget to reward yourself. Also, it is imperative to surround yourself with family and friends who want to see you win. Enjoy the process because it will humble you in so many ways. You can’t have success without some sort of struggle. Always remember your purpose in life for it will always motivate you to keep going. This is all easier said than done however, always remember that every action will have a reaction.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am an actress and I specialize in the film and commercial markets in the southwest region of the industry. I have a hardworking agent down in New Mexico who provides me with wonderful opportunities to work here locally.

Most of my work is in film along with a couple of upcoming web series and now, a feature film. I have starred in a short film called Come Home, one of many short films that I’m extremely proud of because it really introduced me to the art of character acting. It was my first short film and I had won an award for best performance from the Indie Spirit Film Festival in Colorado Springs. That’s when I knew that I should continue on with pursuing this career as it helped me to discover my potential.

Aside from my work, I am also proud of the friendships I have made from being on set. I have great relationships with directors, assistant directors, sound engineers, editors, etc. These are people who need to be recognized in the industry. I have also made friends with other actors who have grown their careers over time. I’m really close with my acting coach who has given her students opportunities to meet with reputable agents and casting directors. I have always kept in contact with relatives who have been in the film industry for years. It’s all a matter of communication when it comes to this industry. But ultimately, it is up to you to create your own luck in life.

What sets me apart from others is that I like to observe and listen a lot more than I like to talk. I like to take in my environment and really think about how I can bring a unique part of myself to a particular role. I journal while on set as it allows me to get to a deeper portion of myself in which I can then use for my character. It allows me to truly find the essence within the character and the tone of the story.

Who have you been inspired by?
My mother has inspired me because she allowed me to float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. I was taught to work hard and commit to the things I wanted. She sees the potential in me and has been a major part of why I do what I do. She has driven me to all of my auditions and has encouraged me to step out on faith. She is one of the main reasons why I can call myself an artist.

My sister is another example of a woman who has inspired me throughout my life. She contributed to my imagination when we were young girls. We played with barbies, watched movies together and even tried to create our own gargoyle wings out of paper. She never judged the way I chose to express myself and now, she is one of my biggest fans apart from my mother and father.
