Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Davis.
Emily, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been an entrepreneur at heart. When I was little, I created and sold bookmarks to earn money for an American Girl doll. Several years ago, my sister and I took a cake decorating class, and that is when I got the bug for baking and decorating. I love creating baked goods that not only taste delicious but look beautiful. I try to channel my inner Food Network star as I am OBSESSED with all of their baking shows!
How I got started making cakepops was all started by a cake disaster. One day, I baked a birthday cake for my dad, and when I removed it from the oven, it looked like it was hit by a large hailstone! It was so bad that not even a pile of frosting could cover the crater! I did not want to throw it away so I froze the cake remains hoping I could repurpose it.
A few days later, my mom stumbled across an article on how to make cakepops and remembered we still had the cake in the freezer. So, we thought, “Why Not?!” The first try was an epic fail. However, through much trial and error, we were determined to master the art of making cakepops. The first flavor we debuted was an irresistible Snickerdoodle cakepop. To this day, Snickerdoodle is one of our most popular flavors. After sharing samples with friends and family and receiving positive feedback, we began the journey that eventually led to the start of the business three years ago.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
First, owning your own business is not a piece of cake (no pun intended 😊)! There is a lot that goes into running a business such as creating a business plan, paying taxes, marketing the product and so much more. Making cakepops originally started out as a hobby for me. When I began the business with my mom, we had no idea where to begin and felt we were way in over our heads. We were talking with our friends one day about our desire to turn the hobby into a bonafide business. They mentioned to us that some states have a program for startup food-related businesses that allow you to operate out of your home if you follow their guidelines. We found that Colorado has a Cottage Food program. This was just what we needed and after much research and working through the regulations, Emily’s Delights LLC was formed. We continue to have some bumps in the road and are constantly learning as we grow. Chocolate can also be very unpredictable so my mom and I literally pray over our chocolate when we’re melting it.
From a personal perspective though, this journey has not been easy as I have been dealing with health issues for the past six years. We have had to adapt, but I am so thankful we can still do the cakepop business as this is my dream.
My advice for someone starting their own business is keep following your dream and don’t stop until you get there. Running your own business takes a lot of hard work and tenacity but all that hard work will pay off majorly in the end. It does not even feel like you’re working because you are doing what you love. For me, baking is my happy place. I love creating and designing cakepops and then seeing someone smile first when they see our cakepops and then smile bigger when they bite into one. Our slogan is “Making Tastebuds Happy One Cakepop at a Time”, and we truly do that.
Please tell us about Emily’s Delights.

Cakepops are the perfect addition to your party, wedding, bridal/baby showers, or just for pure enjoyment! These are easy to serve and do not require utensils or tableware. They are no mess, no fuss! We have very loyal customers who order for their special occasions as well as purchase our Seasonal Flavors. We have also been blessed to cater a fire department’s event for the past three years. We love customizing the cakepops for our client’s event.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel like there are so many more opportunities for woman today than there ever has been. I am a member of a business academy geared towards women, and l love seeing how many women entrepreneurs there are and the community it brings.
Living in America, we women are incredibly blessed with opportunities and privileges that women in other countries would long for and unfortunately do not receive. However, there are still some challenges that we face where we need to find our voice and stand up for ourselves.
I feel like the sky is limitless when it comes to following your dream as long as you have the passion fueling you and courage to pursue it. I am living the American dream of getting to do what I love!
