Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Moon.
Emily, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I opened my business 11 years ago last August, but have had a camera in my hand for as long as I can remember. I was born and raised on the front range of Colorado, where I rode horses, played sports, went camping and fishing. I loved taking photos along the way and then started taking photography more seriously in high school, where I photographed for the yearbook and took every photography class I could. I loved working in the darkroom and learning the art of film photography. I entered some photography contests and began to put my artwork out there more. I started having family and friends reach out for all their photography needs and coming from a small town, I had a great support system! They all really helped me get my business to grow. I took photography and business courses through college and then began to focus more on capturing weddings and family portraits. The last four years, I have really been loving newborn photography and beginning to specialize in them. I have a small studio on the west side of Loveland, which has been an amazing addition to my photography business over the last couple of years.
My favorite photos to take are of people in LOVE! As a photographer, I am so lucky to be photographing my client’s favorite memories and celebrations throughout their lives. Creating a relationship with my clients is the best and I absolutely love watching families grow and capturing every moment with them.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning your own business has it’s perks and downfalls, of course. You have the independence of being your own boss, opportunities to learn and work with others in your field, flexible schedules and do what you love everyday. I do feel a lot of people think it is only luxury and easy, especially being a photographer because people only see the fun side- taking the photos! Most people do not understand the long hours that go into actually keeping that business running. There is the editing, emails, contracts, meetings, social media, websites, taxes, permits, traveling, equipment purchases, late nights, hard work, sometimes heartbreak, and stress. Even with all of that, I wouldn’t change a thing. I love what I do and am thankful everyday to capture special moments for my career!
Any advice for other women, particularly young women, who are just starting their journey would be… Honest hard work does pay off, long hours will be rewarded and waking up excited to capture a new day is the best!
Please tell us about e.Moon Photography.
The majority of my career has be focused on wedding photography. I especially love working with western and country couples, as I am a country girl at heart! I like to say my style is Timeless and True to Life. I want my clients to look at their photographs years down the road and feel like they are exactly back in that moment in time, and see it exactly how it was. While I would say weddings and engagements have been my main priority over the years, newborns have been my new found passion. With newborn photography, it is a fun opportunity to be creative with settings, lighting, colors and styles. Babies are such a blessing and seeing the joy and love of my clients is so rewarding. Also, I love getting those sweet baby snuggles in, too!
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I follow other photographers on social media that I look up to and feel are inspirational. I was lucky to work with some great photographers early in my career, that grew into lasting friendships that I a so thankful for! If you like someone’s work, tell them!
