Life and Work with Erin Foley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Foley.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Erin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey to where I am today, as a chiropractor, acupuncturist and Functional Medicine specialist, began many years ago, right out of high school in southern California. I thought I wanted to be a professional musician, but I took a turn onto an unexpected path. Circumstances led me to a between college semester job in a chiropractor’s office, of which I knew nothing about. This led to a self-education in nutrition, health food, and vitamins, and I fell in love with all things natural health, and the healing power of our body.

My journey then took me to a BS in science and then chiropractic college, and after owning my own clinic in Ventura, California, I sold it and moved to Colorado in 1997. Here my passion for natural health care took me through acupuncture training for which I became nationally certified.

During this time, I was a tri-athlete, runner, skier and heavily into weight training. I was also competing in races, overtraining and getting injured. By the time I made it to Colorado, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia from athletic injuries.

I wanted to know more and how to heal myself. As a lifelong learner, I am always looking for how to incorporate the most effective natural health treatments into my practice, for my patients as well as myself. I was using nutrition and supplements in my practice but upped my education by becoming certified in Functional Medicine.

I now work with women to help them balance their hormones naturally. So much can be done with knowing what to eat specifically for your body, and what supplements to take for your body. We as women are not one size fits all!

Currently, I am healed of fibromyalgia, and I hike our beautiful Colorado mountains, ski, do yoga, and Pilates. Plus, this year I got to travel to Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day, which was an amazing trip. I got married to my husband, Craig, three years ago, and we have our orange kitties Maxx and Cosmo that keep life interesting.

Has it been a smooth road?
I look at my life as a journey, and, of course, there have been challenges. Personally being injured was a challenge, and after 15 years of not being able to exercise with fibromyalgia, I am now healed and am so grateful to have a body that can hike and ski again. But, that journey taught me a lot about self-care, not judging me and being kind to myself, and I now teach that to my patients.

Other challenges were getting a divorce in 2007. At the time, we were both practicing chiropractors in the practice we opened when we moved to Colorado. I learned so much about me, running my business on my own, that it made me who I am today. It also allowed me to discover my spiritual self that had been long buried.

My advice for young women starting out in business is to trust yourself. You do “know”, and listen to your own awareness when faced with many decisions about how to run your business. It is easy to get caught up in a spending cycle when you are a business owner or entrepreneur. Make sure you make your business work for you and serve you while you serve others.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Vibrant Healthy Women Programs – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
As an expert in natural health care I am focusing on helping women balance their hormones naturally. It’s not just about hot flashes! We have other hormones in our body that need to be balanced to create good health, such as our stress hormones like cortisol, our blood sugar hormones and insulin, and our thyroid hormones.

I use Functional Medicine to get to the root cause of hormone imbalances health issues. I work with women with my Vibrant Healthy Woman Programs. In these programs, I do testing such as blood testing and saliva testing, to find out the current state of a women’s hormones and health. I love this because there is no more guessing, no more “do it yourself” projects, for my women in these programs. These programs also can include health coaching and consulting.

This allows me to create a customized program for each woman based on her test results, on what her body needs for nutrition, diet, supplements, lifestyle and exercise.

I typically see women who are having multiple symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, weight gain, blood sugar issues, pre-diabetes, depression, autoimmune diseases, chronic pain, and hot flashes, just to name a few.

Having balanced hormones is so important for a woman because it doesn’t just affect her health, but her relationships, job or business, her productivity, self-esteem and even finances.

I also have an active chiropractic and acupuncture practice. Using these together in my practice allows me to treat many issues as once, such as chronic pain and injuries, headaches, digestive issues, menstrual issues, and I do see a lot of patients for maintenance and wellness care, especially women who want to stay active and pain-free.

I have been told that what set’s me apart is that I really listen, and work with each woman individually.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
When I was in chiropractic college many years ago only about of a quarter of the class was women. I definitely chose a male-dominated industry! But now I see many more women chiropractors in business, and I actively network with them. I even receive referrals from and give referrals to my women colleagues.

As I do a lot of face to face networking, I find that as women, we have such a great opportunity to support and collaborate with each other in our businesses, and not get into competition. We are all unique, and we all will attract the right clients for us to serve.

I think a barrier in general can be our own thoughts and beliefs about what we can, or cannot do. This applies directly to the success of my business, to what thoughts I think and the energy I surround myself with.
