Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Rosch.
Erin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The truth is I have always been a painter. I have just ignored it for the last 35 years. I was a very fine artist as a child if I do say so myself and even peddled my pieces to family for the hefty price of $2 a piece. I remember having no doubt in my mind that I would be a professional artist when I grew up.
Then, as it does, life got a little… confusing. I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in the good ol’ standby of Graphic Design as I thought it would be the most practical way to practice art on a daily basis. Taking a drawing and painting class along the way I managed to pocket well-meaning comments way too close to my heart and convinced myself that my “art for fun” days were well in my past.
I never did actually get a job as a Graphic Designer. Instead, I took on the most important role of wife to Brian and mother to my most prized creations ever, Brody and Ava.
As they grew, I dabbled in a little of this and a little of that and now, I find myself right back where I started. A pocket full of dreams and a new sense of conviction. I have been painting non-stop for the last six months and have been lucky enough to have grown a following of people who are interested in my artwork. I am truly feeling blessed to be able to say that I have been a full-time artist for the last three months.
Has it been a smooth road?
I find that the very hardest part of my journey was (and still is, sometimes) just making the declaration that I am an artist and that someone out there will want my work. Once you declare your path, it has a way of opening up for you. My advice is to stop being wishy-washy in your decision. Declare your path and then start walking it.
You will hear so much advice about easing into a side hustle that you want to make your full-time gig. Keep your options open and keep a backup plan. That absolutely did not work for me. There is no backup plan for me. This is it. I put all my eggs in this basket and I’m running with it. I just want to know that I gave it my all. No excuses.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Erin Rosch Art – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
My artwork is completely intuitive. Which means that I don’t plan or sketch anything ahead of time. Everything, from the color choices to the brushstrokes is completely intuitive. When I try to force a piece or a feeling, I get blocked. Every piece is a complete expression of the mix of emotions I was feeling at the time of the painting.
When I do a commission I like to gather information from my client about where they are currently in their life or what they want to express. Then, I spend a lot of time visualizing and being with that emotion before I start painting. I really try to maintain that connection through the duration of the piece.
Who have you been inspired by?
I am inspired by any woman who is being 100% authentically herself. Some women just exude self-expression and they inspire me to live that way also. Maya Angelou, Lisa Congdon, and my Grandmother who was also a painter, all come to mind.
