Life and Work with Eryn Caskey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eryn Caskey.

Eryn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I had always been that kid that arranged and rearranged my room and the house for my parents, I made stuff, was always doing something (my parent’s nicknamed me Doodles) because of the constant need to be doing something and creating.

I landed in Denver in 2010, always wanting more I searched. I worked in finance for years and really didn’t like the person I was, I was bored, I was not happy with my job, I was not fulfilled and dreaded work. I started painting furniture as a hobby mainly for my own house, then I sold my first piece and it ignited this fire in me where I wanted more. I wanted to see what else I could do. Years passed… I was working in a great pharmacy job, I loved my co-workers and the job but again.. I was bored.

I continued to refinish and repair furniture, I dabbled in barn door building then furniture and then one day it all clicked. This was where I needed to be.

So, after three years of working a full-time job, having our first child I took the plunge and quit my job and was determined to make this a thing.

I worked out of our garage for years (pissing the HOA and some lame neighbors off on the daily)… my poor husband was pulled in as much as I could convince him to help me with things. The business grew, and grew and grew us right out of the garage. We have morphed into a full design, remodel and custom furniture company… here we are today, with our own shop, business partners and an awesome team of talent.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was not easy! OMG, it has not been easy!

I spent years stressing, over-promising, letting people down, neglecting a lot. Burning that candle at both ends. I wanted so badly to do great things and kept pushing to do better each day.

Not giving up and realizing that tears, failure and a shift in direction at times are such a needed equation to this ever-changing work-life balance has been key to our success.

One thing that was a constant is a good support system, you can do great things with God and your family!

My one piece of advice: Believe that you can because you were made for great things!

Please tell us about Rustic Butterfly Interiors.
Collectively we are an interior design studio- we do all things home and business! Kitchen and bath renovations are our everyday. We also have a whole line of custom furniture, we build and install barn doors and create beautiful spaces with intention.

I am most proud of where we came from! Literally, a wife who had big dreams and a husband that allowed my crazy to shine 😉 I love being able to take a concept or idea from a client and with the right vision make changes needed and execute a perfect design. A design that not only changes the look and feel of a home but allows the client to love their space. All while working within a budget. I LOVE being able to save money and pass along that savings to the client. Design does not have to be expensive and if done correctly can be beautiful and timeless.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
This is a tough one for me. I am the worst about asking for help, allowing people to get close (I am a control freak and perfectionist… qualities I am well aware of).

Joining Facebook groups specific to your trade is helpful when you need quick advice or want to silently stand back and observe. The best piece of advice is to find someone that is like-minded, NEVER try and compete, there is enough for everyone. I have worked with some great guys over the years and some not so great guys, creating that core group of supporters and encourage-rs is key.
