Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Teeters and Sara Murphy.
Jennifer and Sara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We became friends in 2010, and though we knew that we each loved to cook and bake, it wasn’t until a volunteer retreat in 2017 that we realized we had the same dream of opening our own bakery. This realization led us into the process of brainstorming ideas, talking about dreams and setting goals. One year later, The Flour Shop was born.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to opening a business has not been smooth but we’ve enjoyed every mile of it. We have learned from every mistake and had so much fun, even when we’ve had no idea what we were doing. The hardest thing for us is navigating state and local regulations but we have been lucky to have each other to depend on. Our advice for other women starting out on their journey would be to take the help and support offered by others. Some of our biggest supporters and customers are other women we have met along our individual and collective journeys. Another piece of advice is be vocal! Tell people about your business and ideas, tell your partner(s) how you feel and what you need and tell everyone what you need, people may have the skills and resources that you are looking for.
Please tell us about The Flour Shop Colorado.
We believe that food is the universal love language, and cookies say “I love you”. It’s our hope that through our made-with-love cookies and beautiful packaging, our customers will be able to send a little love to the very special people in their lives. Along with our beautiful packaging and custom notes on every order, we are known for our Lemon Lavender Cookies. They were our first collaboration and our most popular cookies. We also love custom orders and creating custom cookies to satisfy any craving or to turn a family recipe into a delicious cookie.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Both of us came from very close families with supportive parents. This has set us up for success because we have always known that we have support and it made us willing to take risks.
