Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Pearson.
Jenny, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My skincare journey started my sophomore year of college when I took a job as a receptionist at a Medspa. I was introduced to the in’s and out’s of the skincare world and I was hooked! I loved the idea of helping people and making them feel good in the process. I knew that I had found my calling.
I finished my English degree at CSU but quickly went on to complete an esthetics program in Fort Collins. I got my license in the summer of 2012 and soon after started working at a Medspa in Cherry Creek. This was an amazing start for my career as I was able to learn even more about skincare. By 2016, I had moved back to Fort Collins and was encouraged by family to start my own skincare business. In July of that year, I took the giant leap and opened Room 9 ¾. I started in the comfort of my home and have grown into renting a commercial space in Windsor. It has been such a joy to see the changes and progress Room 9 3/4 has made in three years. I can’t wait to see what’s next!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I wish! For some reason, there’s this vision that once the doors open people will just come; but there is nothing easy about starting (and maintaining) a business. It takes time, patience and commitment. There were many days I didn’t know if I was cut out to do it. I loved the actual part of being an esthetician, giving facials, talking about product; but I also had to think about the parts outside my comfort zone: marketing, networking, accounting, inventory, etc. Being an introvert and getting out there and talking about my business was so hard, and still is to this day! I have learned a lot since first opening and have grown so much but there are always things I can improve. There will always be challenges, struggles and hardships. Maintaining a business isn’t easy. At the end of the day though, I don’t dread a 9-5 job and I’m not “working for the weekend” like I used to. I feel so blessed that I have built a business around doing something I love.
My biggest advice is to make sure you have a strong support system behind you. While you are the face of your brand, it’s important to have others to lift you up on the hard days. Being self-employed you become your own boss but you also become your own cheerleader which in turn can become exhausting! On bad days you have to pump yourself up, on good days you have to reward yourself, but some days you just need someone to listen. I feel so fortunate that I have such a supportive and encouraging family.
Please tell us about Room 9 3/4.
I am a Licensed Esthetician aka Skin Therapist. I’m fully trained in waxing, makeup application and laser treatments; however, performing facial treatments is my true passion. I opened Room 9 ¾ for a place to help make your skin feel magical. I specialize in customized skincare treatment plans including facials, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, chemical peels, MySkinBuddy and Image Skincare products. Whether it’s creating a monthly skincare plan or just providing a relaxing getaway from the everyday chaos, my goal is to meet clients wherever they are on their skincare journey.
The name Room 9 3/4 is certainly unique as it doesn’t have the typical “spa-like’ name but I wanted it to different and special to me. As much as I love skincare, I also have a slight obsession with Harry Potter… so yes, it’s totally a Harry Potter reference. Some days, I worry that people don’t get it and it’s true some don’t, but others recognize it right away and have even started thinking of me when they see Harry Potter things. It’s a magical escape for anyone looking for relaxation!
Who have you been inspired by?
There’s no way I would be where I am without my mom. My mom not only is the most patient, kind, loving, supportive and encouraging person I know she is also a huge reason why I’m an esthetician. She recommended the receptionist job over 10 years ago and encouraged my business from day one. She continues to cheer me on through all the ups and downs of life and I appreciate her every day for that.
Being the youngest of three girls, I also can’t help but look up to my two older sisters. They both are driven, independent women and are also amazing moms to their kids. Now, being a business owner and a mom, I’ve been learning to balance it all; but I have the best to look up to. I’m so thankful for my relationship with them and that we will always have each other to lean on through the changes of life.
