Life and Work with Jessica Nitti

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Nitti.

Jessica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my hair career when I was just seventeen, in my home state of Florida. Not knowing I was embarking on a journey that would change my life forever, I enrolled in cosmetology school and lost myself in the curriculum. It was the most fun I’d ever had, and before I knew it, I was licensed by the state of Florida. I immediately found a chair and began building my book. It didn’t take long before I knew I’d made the right career choice; I was happy, and so were my guests.

At least, I thought I was happy. One trip to Colorado changed my perspective on home, and I found myself relocating across the country shortly thereafter. Now that I’ve been living here I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else. After becoming established as a licensed hairstylist here in Colorado, I began building my career from the bottom up for the second time in my life.

Not long after, I found Sola Salons and was determined to make that my next move. Finally, after two years of hard work, I was able to open my own studio within Sola, and Glamology Lounge was born. While it’s not easy, I am fulfilling my dream as a business owner.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Taking the leap and starting my business was definitely hard, and I was so scared I was going to fail. Not only fail myself, but my family, and my clients. It wasn’t just a monetary investment, it was so much more!

I remember thinking one night, ‘If I don’t do this if I don’t take this tiny jump, what am I doing with my life? What is life without jumping a little?’ And that was it. The next day I started working on achieving my dream.

I think no matter what you’re facing you can handle it. You just need to believe that you’re not going fail, but if you do, that’s okay too. I accepted this could possibly fail and saw the reality of it, and it wasn’t so bad.

Tell us more about your work, what else should we know?
I am a hairstylist and I specialize in color services, specifically vivid colors. Vivids, or unnatural colors like pinks or blues, are my favorite things to paint on a hair canvas. While I absolutely do the normal everyday root touch-ups or highlights, I just prefer rainbows! My two favorite haircuts to do are the bob or the shag. They’re a challenge, and they never seem to go out of style.

I am also a member of The Unicorn Tribe, a collective of artists from around the globe that push the boundaries of hair painting and styling. They are so inspiring to me and push me to be a better stylist every day. I love my tribe!

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel like there are plenty of opportunities for women today in our country. For example, I was able to open my business without any hindrance against me. In fact, there’s been a 74% increase in women owned businesses over the last twenty years. Running my own company offers me the opportunity to learn from other ambitious, likeminded women who have taken the leap. I believe women today have access to better education and the sky is the limit when it comes to how far we want to go. Education is the key to confidence and in turn, success. Women do more today than we’ve ever been able to do and there’s a negative spin that makes us think we can’t.
