Life and Work with Jonathan Weimer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Weimer.

Jonathan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in Golden, CO in a very athletic minded household and throughout my athletic career, I dealt with many different injuries. Luckily, none of these injuries were serious and I was always able to bounce back from those with proper rehab and strength training. Because of those injuries, I always had a passion for working with athletes and being involved in healthcare which leads me down the path of my studies in Health, Sport and Exercise Science before getting graduate degrees; Doctor of Chiropractic and Masters in Sports Science and Rehabilitation.

After school, I was lucky enough to intern/fellow at two world-class orthopedic (Steadman Hawkins Clinic Denver) and integrative healthcare(Vail Integrative Medical Group) clinics as part of my post-graduate studies. Working in these clinics taught me the importance of the integrative care model and the evolution of proper patient care.

I moved back to Denver at the end of 2012, wanting to put these new skills and passion to work. In March 2013, I opened Highlands Sport and Spine in the Sunnyside/Lower Highlands neighborhood of Denver and have been having a blast ever since. Highlands Sport and Spine started as a one-man shop, ME, with the long term goal of creating an integrative health care facility. HSS has grown significantly over the past 6 years, now offering sports chiropractic, dry needling, massage therapy, personal training, performance training, and sports recovery services. Later this summer I will be opening a second location in Northglenn, 8 miles north of the flagship location.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road, not exactly but I wouldn’t change a thing. I got into this thinking that I knew everything there was to know about pain and rehab so what could be so tough about opening my own office? Well… knowing a lot about how to heal people is great but it doesn’t teach you how to run a business. School teaches us how to think like doctors but a doctor doesn’t necessarily think like an entrepreneur or business owner. Wearing these various hats of technician, manager, and entrepreneur can be difficult and I really have to be strategic with my time to accomplish everything that needs to be done. I’ve been through tons and ups and downs along the way but I have to say that the most important thing to creating success throughout this crazy journey is keeping the right mindset. If you can keep the right mindset, stay aware of what is going on around you and live in the present moment, great things will happen.

If someone was looking for one piece of advice with starting their own business, I’d have to say PATIENCE.

Please tell us about Highlands Sport and Spine.
Highlands Sport and Spine is known for empowering movement and delivering exceptional patient care using an integrative model. We specialize in treating pain relief and sports injuries with conservative treatment methods like chiropractic, dry needling, massage therapy, blood flow restriction training, physical rehab, and personal training. Our clients have come to expect a comprehensive treatment every time they come in and that is what we strive to deliver. In a day in age where the norm is getting 5 minutes of your doctors time, we prefer to spend more time with our patients. Our initial visits are 45-60 minutes and follow-ups 20-30 minutes, integrating many different treatment types within those visits.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
I think I was always taught by my parents the benefits of hard work and I have applied that to everything that I do. Whether it was school, sports or occupation, I have always been willing to put in the extra work. The perseverance needed to run a startup business is essential to the long term success of the business and if I didn’t develop great work ethic as a child, I’m not sure I’d be where I am today.
