Life and Work with Jordanna Quinn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordanna Quinn.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began this medical practice only four months ago. However, it was ever since I was a small girl that I became obsessed with wanting to be a doctor and helping others. I knew from a very early age that medicine was my path in life. I wanted to help people feel good and I really enjoyed learning and science.

In college, when I was beginning to apply to medical schools, I was slightly disenfranchised with medicine. I had not met many physicians that I looked up to and did not feel, overall, like they cared about my actual health. I researched other avenues of medicine, and eventually found Osteopathic Medicine.

Osteopathic Medicine is very similar to traditional western medicine. I went to DO school instead of MD school. The difference in my training and that of a regular MD is that, in addition to all of the science classes and hospital work, we also learn physical manipulations (like chiropractors or physical therapists). Our training as physicians tends to be more well rounded, and focuses slightly more on actual health, than just on disease.

I then chose the specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). This area of medicine helps patients heal from physical ailments such as Traumatic Brain Injuries, Spinal Cord Injuries, Sports Injuries, Pain, Neurologic Conditions, etc. It is the study of anything that makes you not move normally. Being a lifelong athlete, I personally related to this type of medicine and decided it is how I wanted to help people the most.

Once I became a PM&R physician, I specialized in sports medicine and pain management. I then found a more specialized area of medicine called Regenerative Medicine. This type of medicine uses your body’s own stem cells and platelets to heal itself. I became obsessed and took a ton of courses and learned how to do these procedures. During this time, I also found other branches of medicine (Functional Medicine, IV therapies, Aesthetics) where I could focus on the patient as a whole. So, while regenerative medicine is really my passion, helping my athletes and elderly patients return to their sport or daily physical activity, I am also able to help patients improve their overall quality of life.

I do aesthetics (botox and fillers) to help patients look good and feel good, mentally, about themselves. I spend a lot of time with my patients discussing their diet and how it relates to pain and chronic disease. I do IV vitamins for sports recovery and to help patients with chronic disease really optimize their health to the best I can. I truly love what I do and hope to improve the lives of every person I meet.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been so many struggles along the way. Medical school was the hardest thing I have ever gone through. There is more information to learn than there are hours in a day. I then chose a path in medicine that is extremely male-dominated. It is difficult to be taken seriously as a Regenerative medicine physician (female). I feel like women in medicine have to work twice as hard as men, as patients assume a white male is a doctor but still have preconceived notions about women in medicine.

Starting my business is the second most difficult thing I have ever done (and I have three kids!). It takes so much time and belief in yourself that it will be successful. Being a working mother who financially supports her family has also been difficult. We, as women, are pulled in so many directions. And while I have learned that we can, actually, do it all, we truly just cannot do it all at once.

So, my advice would be that if the time isn’t right, now, it will be in the future. This goes for starting a business, having children, or even just taking a step back and enjoying the process that you are in now. We can do it all, we just can’t do it all at once.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with KORE REGENERATIVE MEDICINE – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
As a physician, I am most proud of the place I am at in my career. I only practice the type of medicine that I believe in. I truly spend a significant amount of time and money on my continued education, which sets me apart from so many other physicians. I also really spend a lot of time with my patients, and focus on improving their health, and not just trying to get them out of my office as soon as possible. I can both discuss nutrition and natural medicine, and prescribe medications when necessary. My patients have the benefit of me not being tied to a specific treatment modality, but only being tied to an outcome: improved quality of life. I only offer treatments to my patients that I would do to myself or my closest family members.  I really focus on health and happiness and have a lot to offer my patients, from many different angles. Because of the time and money I have spent on my education, I am a nationally recognized physician in Aesthetics (I speak at conferences and train other physicians) and in Regenerative Medicine. Patients are referred to my clinic from around the country, seeking my expertise. Being a mother and a woman who supports her family, I am kind to and supportive of my staff.  I understand their needs as mothers, people with lives, etc, when they have a sick family member or need to take time off. I chose to lead by example and compassion, and not by an iron fist. I want to be a positive influence on my staff, my patients, and anyone who’s life I am privileged enough to be a part of.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
One day at a time. Consider your options and truly find out what is important to you. Having realistic goals is important so that you don’t burn out. Focus on YOUR goals, which may be completely different than someone else’s goals. I have heard over and over again that I can’t do it because of my kids, or because I didn’t come from educated parents or money, but here I am.

For example, the top three things that are important to me are: friends and family, staying present on my kids’ lives, despite being busy, and remaining healthy and active.  So I work hard at work, and don’t screw around.  I stay focused and I am efficient in my work.  When I come home, I’m present with my kids until they go to bed.  I plan meals (even when I’m busy) I make my kids eat healthy (even though it would be easier to feed them crap) and I wake up an hour early almost every day to exercise.

There are no shortcuts in life and the easy way out is never the best way forward.

Finally, everyone has their own issues. So, while you may think your path or situation is the most difficult and everyone else is so lucky for whatever reason, they also have their own demons to fight daily. So, keep pushing, cause it will be worth it, and stay focused on what is important to you. No one else can dictate your priorities.

I’ve had the benefit of treatment by Dr. Quinn — as a patient, I found her a genuinely supportive caregiver. As someone whose interests run toward leading edge healthcare (I read primary literature A LOT), I found that — behind a superb bedside manner — is a very acute brain that’s quite on top of the latest research. That’s a rarity. Could not recommend her more strongly.
