Life and Work with Joshalynn Green

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshalynn Green.

Joshalynn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
At a young age, I always wanted to help those in need and give back to my community. As a child I can remember giving my happy meals to homeless people who were on the street. Little did I know, my passion for helping others would carry over to adulthood.

Before I founded Phenomenal Women on the campus of Miles College, a historically black institution located in Birmingham Alabama in 2014, I originally had hoped to play basketball, but after several devastating knee injuries, a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus, my dream came to a grinding halt. After giving up on my dream, I thought what next? It was then that Phenomenal Women was born. I turned a setback into focusing on my original passion from when I was a little girl, which was to help others. I wanted to establish an organization to empower, encourage and uplift the next generation of women leaders. While also letting women know it doesn’t matter what your circumstances are if I can do it you can do it too. I use my journey and life adversities to push me and inspire others. I am someone who grew up in what statistics call a broken home without a father around, while surrounded around a foster care environment. By the age of 18, I had gone to over a dozen different schools across seven states. But despite my circumstances, I prevailed. That’s why it is my lifelong mission to serve the community and inspire women far and near. I believe there are no limits to any girl or woman’s potential. “How can the sky be the limit when there are footprints on the moon?” At Phenomenal Women, we set the example that all women are queens even without a crown.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was not a smooth journey early on. When I reestablished the organization in Denver in 2017, I hosted my first open-house to spread the word. Only five people attended the event. I recall thinking to myself this isn’t for me. What am I doing? I almost gave up. I found myself crying outside of the room. It was then that I realized that my mission was much bigger than me and it was time to get to work.

Although I almost gave up, I had so much support from my friends and family. I started expanding my current network and resources, adopting mentors, attending business courses, and I expanded my team. With the help of my team, we were able to recruit over 30 girls to join our 2019 12 week life skills youth program and add new initiatives which are constantly expanding.

My advice to someone reading this is just because it’s not happening when you want it to happen. It doesn’t mean that it’s not going to happen. Where there’s a will, there’s away. Always have faith, work hard, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Phenomenal Women Inc. – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Phenomenal Women Inc was re-initiated in Denver Colorado in 2017. The organization is a Colorado-based nonprofit. We strive to empower all women to reach their fullest potential. This is successfully done through community events and initiatives. We operate out of three pillars:

Community Service – We partner with various shelters in Colorado throughout the year to help the homeless community by providing toiletries, hygiene items, and clothes.

Women Empowerment – We bring women together to promote the spirit of volunteerism, create an authentic sisterhood and provide encouraging workshops as well as events.

Youth Enrichment – We strive to provide educational support for students, motivational workshops, scholarships, life skills, new experiences, and meaningful learning activities through our Phenomenal Women Youth Program.

One of our biggest events is our annual Invest in You Symposium, which is an event geared towards bringing entrepreneurs, business owners, community leaders, students, and many others together to invest in themselves through various motivational speakers, inspirational messages, and a full day of networking!

I have an amazing team of volunteers who help carry out our mission to help create meaningful experiences for our students.

I am most proud of our impact on the community, youth programming, and volunteer efforts!

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
There are many opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for. Women, in particular, are taking on many leadership roles in corporate, communities, and as business owners. I would say that many advantages and opportunities for women are definitely on the rise, especially in Denver. Seeing many women take on leadership opportunities is a true testament to what we are capable of doing when we believe in ourselves. It also gives aspiring leaders hope for the future.
