Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Dorfman.
Karen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Prior to real estate, I worked as a nanny for a large network of families throughout the Denver metro area. I was extremely passionate about my job, but after ten years, I was becoming increasingly lonely and felt the lack of adult-interaction was causing my brain to slowly disintegrate. I sought after a career that would broaden my social horizons and allow for an exciting, fast-paced environment that would stimulate my brain socially, professionally, academically, and personally. I became licensed the summer of 2017 and after a brief stint at a prior brokerage, I joined the top-producing team, BSW Group, at Madison and Company Properties, which broke off and became BSW Real Estate in December of 2018. It has been thrilling to go from a team of just four licensed realtors to over 25 in just over a year, and it is an honor to be a part of the original crew and such an integral part of our company’s growth. The mentorship, education, and support I have received through BSW Real Estate has helped me formulate a branding that appeals specifically to my empathetic nature. The world of customer service and care-giving has always spoken to my people-pleasing attitude and approach, and I feel honored to help people through the process of making one of the most important and expensive investments they will make throughout their lifetime.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path that has lead me to where I am now has consisted of obstacles that I can only feel blessed to have encountered. I have learned that I often strive during the struggle and some of my proudest and biggest achievements have come from the character I have branded for myself through the endurance and persistence of each trial. Every closed door has become a neon sign of opportunity, and with every breached threshold, I am learning that the only true disadvantage lies in the restrictions you mentally place upon yourself.
I recently went on a retreat to Scottsdale, AZ with a group of women in real estate. We quickly discovered an underlying theme to our businesses and strove to better understand the attitudes we have about ourselves and the inevitable effect our positivity or negativity has on our careers. As women, we are consistently matching ourselves against what we perceive as our competition, rather than recognizing and indulging in the collaborative, supportive, nurturing instincts our femininity provides. After a week of vulnerability and building a bond none of us would have expected, we were shown that the limitations we perceived ourselves to have were only the ones we put upon ourselves. We all had nothing but complimentary things to say about one another and yet struggled to have that same empathetic, understanding approach with ourselves. Imagine the person you could be if you only spoke light into your day?
Please tell us about BSW Real Estate.
Since the beginning of my career, I have made a consistent effort to be authentic in my brand. What is my brand? It is me! Who am I? I am a caregiver, a helper, a nurturer, a people-pleaser. I have always made it apparent to my clients that I am more interested in cultivating the relationship, meeting their needs and expectations, and providing the necessary resources than I am about the transaction side to this industry. It’s important to me to be their partner and their friend in addition to being their Realtor. I have met people of all ages, all backgrounds, all professions, and demographics, and I have been able to build solid, lasting connections with each and every one of them. Considering I entered into this industry to help broaden my social horizons, this has been the driving point of my desire to connect with more people and fuel my database.
That being said, I am extremely proud of my production and believe I owe my success to the simple approach of first being a person, then being a professional. In my first two years of real estate, I sold just over 20 million worth of production and had the honor of assisting over 50 people. I am passionate about helping others understand the world of real estate and how to capitalize on it as a wealth-building aspect for their future. It is exciting seeing people grasp the concept of what an incredible investment opportunity buying a home can be and I love knowing that I am helping these people build a more finite, stable, tangible future for themselves and their legacy.
