Life and Work with Kelsey Luciano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Luciano.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always had a passion for video and storytelling. I love movies, books, and tv shows, and I would make my own silly videos with friends late at night growing up. Owning my own business was also a huge goal of mine, so it just felt right to bring the two together. However, I didn’t decide to take the leap until I was pregnant with my daughter. I knew I wanted to stay home with her, but also knew I couldn’t hack it a stay at home mom. I really wanted to have something for me that luckily helped contribute to my family too! I shot my first wedding film when I was six months pregnant and fell in love! I loved telling my couples stories and helping them relive a once in a lifetime event. I’ve been building my business for six years now and have captured so many amazing events as well as helped my fellow small business owners with branding films and other video projects. While my daughter is now in Kindergarten, I love the flexibility that this business has afforded me to work, but still make time for my daughter and my family.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the biggest obstacle in my line of work is comparison and self-doubt. It’s easy to get locked in the whole “they are so much better than me and I’ll never get to that level” game. But really everyone is on their own journey, and it’s just something I have to remind myself of. As for self-doubt, that’s something I’m constantly working on! Luckily, I’ve surrounded myself with some really great female entrepreneurs who build each other up and makes the work from home life less lonely. My husband is also super supportive and is one of my biggest cheerleaders. I’d say if you are just starting to not fall into the comparison trap, and to network like crazy! My business really took off when I got out in the world and met other people in my industry. And I’ve met some really great friends along the way too!

Please tell us about Kelsey Luciano Productions.
I primarily specialize in wedding and brand films. My dad once looked over my shoulder when I was working and said “You have the coolest job. You get to be with people on the happiest day of their lives!”. It really made me feel proud of what I do and what I’ve built. I offer a pretty classic style with true to life colors. Couples choose me because they love the storytelling aspect of my films. I use as much audio from their wedding day as possible and bring it together with visuals and spend hours picking the perfect song to match the vibe of their day. I like to let things happen naturally and try to capture the real moment between getting those epic mountain top shots. I also love having fun with my couples on their wedding day! I have all sorts of dad jokes in my pocket to make my couples laugh.

My other passion is branding films. Every entrepreneur and business owner has a deep connection to their work and why they do what they do and I want to help them show that to their clients. I always start a consultation with them telling me their “why” or their favorite part about their business. Their eyes light up and they swell with pride and it’s the thing I love to capture the most because I feel the same when I talk about my own business.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I actually love paper and writing things down. I have several notebooks and planners, but I recently got an iPadPro and now my planner and notes live there. It’s really helped my productivity because I can easily search my notes which lets me put ideas into action far easier! Before I would write them down and then forget about it. I use GoodNotes for my planner and my notebooks, and I created my planner template (which is a bullet journal style) in Procreate. I also love Trello and my CRM HoneyBook. I don’t think I could do life without them. I also love the Pursuit with Purpose podcast. It’s not just about business ownership, but being present in your business, self-care, and more of the emotional side of business ownership and life!
