Life and Work with Kyleen Olson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyleen Olson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Michigan and I call the Upper Peninsula home. I have lived in six states over the last fifteen years, I have to say, Colorado is my favorite. We moved away eight years ago and kicked ourselves almost everyday until we made it back. I am a wife to a hard working ranch hand and horseman. We have two beautiful children that keep us active. That is why I started my business in first place, to capture my son when he was born. I recently started shooting film stock and love testing my abilities. Seeing photos of my children look like the ones from my childhood is nostalgic.

Has it been a smooth road?
Oh, so many struggles. When I started, I made all the mistakes. I bought a camera and called myself a photographer. Oh yes, it is true. Moving and restarting my business so many times was never easy. I learned something new about myself in each move. Marketing a new business is a huge struggle. My advice for anyone starting their journey is to just learn from your mistakes. Reach out to others who have been there before and ask for help if you need it. Do not be afraid to ask for tips and tricks.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kyleen Olson Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I like to call myself a professional photographer. I work hard to capture memories for others. When it is all said and done, photographs is what we have left of our memories. To tell our stories. I am so proud of myself for sticking with my business through all we have been through. It was hard, but I pushed on. I asked for help and grew as a person and business. I believe what sets me apart is being there for my clients. During weddings, I am not just there to capture the day, I am there to make sure everything goes smoothly. During senior portraits, we will laugh, be silly and make it an adventure as we hike through locations. Personal brand photos are more than just headshots. I dive into brands with clients and we work on the story they want to tell. I work closely with all of my clients. They become more like friends than anything else.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I believe women can thrive in all areas if they want to. We may need to work a bit harder and prove ourselves a bit more, but we can. We thrive in agriculture because of our big hearts and determination. We thrive in customer service businesses because we care about who we are helping. We are strong and sometimes stubborn. It helps!
