Life and Work with Laura Sharp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Sharp.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Laura. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I first fell into creative design work as an illustrator for Wheat and Honey Co, an amazing business owned by a college friend of mine. This led me to start my own business where I focused primarily on wedding invitations, art prints, and greeting cards— but something was lacking for me, and I soon found it to be the relationships (enneagram 2 over here!).

This is where Koselig Creative came in. I found that my personality is much more focused on the process, so I tailored my business to center on branding. This way, I am building an intentional, long-term relationship with my clients in order to learn their business— all the while, building a purposeful aesthetic that makes clients feel at home with themselves (koselig) and confident in their brand!

It has been such a life-giving process honing in on the creative pursuits which make me feel koselig so that I can, in turn, build up other creative business owners.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being a brand designer— like anything— has its ups and downs. There are times I sit behind my computer screen for hours on end (definitely more often than I’d like…) poring over potential font choices or slowly, painfully attempting to master Illustrator.

But then, I think back to my old job: sitting behind a computer screen from 8 to 5, meticulously editing PowerPoint presentations and financial models of information that was never personal, nor life-giving, to me. And then I become EXTREMELY grateful. Not only is my time behind the computer screen less than it was before, but I also LOVE what is on my computer screen and the people it connects me with.

For those who are just starting their creative journey or those who have found themselves in a bit of a slump, remind yourself of why you set out to do what you are doing. Celebrate the growth, even if it feels small. Plan tactfully for the future. You can do it!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Koselig Creative – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I create intentional, organic, and authentic art for business owners looking to feel confident in their brand. As a current mental health counseling graduate student and former corporate employee involved in developmental leadership program, I embrace my widespread background, celebrating the distinctive experience it enables me to work out of.

Koselig Creative was built on the belief that we are most comfortable with ourselves (koselig) when we begin to realize who we are: so very loved and perfectly known. Sooner or later, a creative business owner will find that they cannot stand behind a brand which does not feel cohesive to their own personality. My work links your own identity to your company’s brand, enabling you to feel koselig in your business.

In order to spread this mission further, 10% of Koselig Creative’s profits go to Equal Justice Initiative, an organization whose mission is to end mass incarceration in the US, challenge racial and economic injustice, and protect basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. I want to fight against racism and disparity because I believe everyone should be able to feel at home (koselig) in the US, no matter their race, culture, SES, gender, religion, etc.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well-positioned for?
We must celebrate and hone in on our strengths because there are SO many! Every woman is unique, which is what makes us all the more beautiful!

From my experience, several of my close girlfriends are style-oriented and aesthetically-minded, meaning they are amazing at interior and exterior design and decorating, fashion styling, party planning, etc. Speaking of party planning, my close girlfriends also tend to be excellent hostesses, bringing together diverse groups of people over meals and/or drinks to build community. These are only a couple of the giftings that my friends have. The options are limitless!
