Life and Work with Lauren Wright

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Wright.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lauren. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was young, my Great Grandmother taught me how to knit. I fell in love with the way this tedious action could become something larger. Growing up, I made things all the time but I never thought about it as something that was more than just a hobby.

Once I got out of college, I began to see more people making incredible things by hand. I realized that this wasn’t just ‘women’s work’ or a hobby. I felt validated and inspired. I wanted to take these skills that my great grandmother taught me and make things that were modern and different.

There is such a great community of makers in Denver and I’m always so excited to see what makes others inspired.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s so easy to hop on Instagram and spiral down someone else’s perfectly curated life. I think everyone struggles with comparing themselves to what we see online. Sometimes, I see people who are so talented that it makes me wonder what I’m doing.

I have to remind myself that others probably feel the same way and no one should base their creative worth on anyone else. You have to take a step back and appreciate the things you’re good at and remember why you do them.

What do you do? What do you specialize in?
Recently, my friend Kaylee and I created a podcast called RomComversations where we discuss and joke about the movies we love to hate. It has been an entirely different type of creative experience and it’s so much fun. We’re currently on most Podcast platforms like iTunes and Stitcher!

Aside from the podcast, I love the chance to do anything with my hands. I knit and sew my own clothes, keep bees, bake, garden, teach embroidery classes, spin yarn – I will try almost anything once. Nothing is more exciting than to see these tiny actions build up into something tangible and real.

Who have you been inspired by?
I learned almost all of my handcrafting abilities from my Great Grandmother. She made all her own clothes, grew her own food, and hand-stitched a quilt for each of my family members when they got married.

My mother is extremely creative in different areas of design and cooking. I like to think I got the best of both worlds from the two of them.

Now that I’m older, I really appreciate growing up around women who were so independent and encouraged me to try anything I was interested in.
