Life & Work with Leah Goetzel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Goetzel

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work is colorful, fun, and bold. I want people to look back on their wedding photos and *feel* how their day felt. I want the beautiful blue sky to come through and the lush green grass to be shown. I always tell people I operate on a 60% candid, 40% posed formula. I am a fly on the wall during moments and a director during family formals. I will tell you what to do with your hands or fix your hair if it’s going haywire, but I want to let moments unfold. I want to tell your story as it was. Perfectly imperfect. Being a Colorado wedding photographer has so many perks. I mean, we have the gorgeous mountains in our backyard. But I also try not to rely too heavily on those epic landscapes. Otherwise, all my photos might look the same. I want to tell each of my couples’ unique stories, regardless of whether they get married in their backyard, on a mountain, or at a large wedding venue.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I’ve learned so much. I am still constantly learning. The first thing I’ve learned is how important it is *not* to work. I can be a workaholic, which means my relationships and mental health can sometimes be put on the back burner. I’ve learned that there is no point in working hard if you’re working yourself to death or not celebrating and living. One incredible benefit of working for yourself is you get to control your hours. So I’ve started taking two days off—no ifs and or buts. One day is just for me, so I can lie around and watch crappy reality TV. The other is for my partner and date day. It’s still hard for me to fully power off my phone and not check my email. But I’m working on it! The second thing I’ve learned is how to take inspiration outside my industry. I used to have a Pinterest page of wedding photography that I loved. I would follow all these wedding photographers on Instagram and constantly compare or try to emulate them. And I could feel myself losing all my creativity. Now I try to find inspiration from fashion photographers, film, songs, books. Inspiration is all around us. I’m now so much more inspired by how the light hits my windows every evening than my Instagram feed.
