Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory King.
Mallory, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve struggled with my weight as early on as 4th grade. As a teenager, I developed a lot of insecurities and this continued on into college until one day, it finally clicked for me. One of the breakthrough moments was going to the doctor, stepping on the scale, and seeing it read 217lbs. She told me I was on the road to obesity and the slew of health issues that would follow if I didn’t start taking better care of myself. It terrified me and I knew at the moment that something had to change. I started making small changes in my lifestyle but things really started to come together in college. I was still over 200lbs and committed myself to losing the extra weight. I began documenting my journey on Instagram (@mallorykingfitness). I shared my meals, my workouts, and progress. Over the course of two years, I ended up losing 100lbs and grew a following on social media. I was getting so many messages from people asking me to help them do the same. I became passionate about helping others and decided to get certified in personal training and sport’s nutrition. For the last six years, I have coached thousands of clients in reaching their fitness and weight loss goals. I built my business out of a need in the fitness community to promote sustainable approaches to weight loss. My clients aren’t looking to be shredded or have a six-pack. My clients are looking to feel good in their skin while enjoying their diet and exercise. I promote eating all foods in moderation and finding an outlet to exercise they truly enjoy. I have built my business on authenticity, practical approaches for health, and caring about my clients like they’re my family.
Has it been a smooth road?
Building a business is never an easy accomplishment but if you’re feeling lost, know that that is normal. I started my business with no idea it would manifest into what it is today. I took it one step at a time and learned as I went. I provided as much value as I could to my audience, particularly by starting a blog where I could share free resources. This allowed me to connect and build a relationship with potential clients. From there, I researched every challenge as it came. I learned to build a website on my own, marketing skills, and everything needed to run a business along the way. I have made many mistakes in my business but they turned into learning experiences. I now know what works for me and what doesn’t. My advice to women starting their journey is to put one foot in front of the other. You learn as you go.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with King’s Coaching – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in teaching women how to create practical strategies for weight management. What sets me apart from other trainers or nutrition coaching is the mental work that is included in my programs. Many women come to me struggling with their relationship with food and their body. We dig into the limiting beliefs they have about themselves and challenge them. We work to improve positive self-talk and find healthy, productive solutions to dealing with stress. I have learned over the years that what holds people back from a healthy lifestyle has everything to do with their attitude about themselves. It’s hard to practice good self-care habits when you don’t feel you deserve it.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Absolutely, there is a need for more authentic, “real life” women in the fitness industry. When I say “real life” I mean women you see in the grocery store, at the bank, at your community events. We have enough “fitness influencers” on social media with their six-packs and perfect genetics. And that is wonderful for those women! But the fitness space is lacking women who promote a balanced lifestyle. You don’t need to live in the gym to feel healthy. You don’t need to cut out processed foods to feel good in your body. We need more women showing up as their best selves, whatever version that maybe, but it certainly does not have to be the perfect model’s body to be inspiring to share.
