Life and Work with Margaret French

Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret French.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Margaret. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always been a creative, and being able to express myself and allow others to express themselves has always been important to me. Combining that with my identity as a queer woman to further visibility for as many different kinds of queerness is incredibly rewarding. I’ve always tried to be as open and honest about myself as possible, whether that’s as simple as my feelings about a style trend to as complicated as my polyamorous relationship. Nothing is completely off the table.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being your 100% true self on social media will never be easy. My family has been stalked and threatened for our less than orthodox relationship status. Being a small business owner, especially one in a creative field, is often heartbreaking. Things you love may flop, people can be terrible, life can just get really overwhelming. The only advice I have when things get hard is to step back, take a look at what you’re doing and why you’re doing it and honestly assess whether or not it’s worth it. I’m not the kind of person to believe that you should push through any adversity for some major goal. Sometimes, mental and physical health needs to come first, and that’s ok.

Please tell us about Rex Clothiers.
My company, Rex Clothiers, makes retro style LGBTQ+ and feminist clothing. Our motto is “old fashion, not old fashioned.” Vintage and retro aesthetics hold an appeal for a huge group of people but vintage and retro values absolutely do not. We strive to champion causes that are important to underrepresented groups in a way that will compliment a variety of styles.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
As a small business owner, I am constantly striving to be taken seriously. As a young woman, that can be exceedingly difficult. But I choose to go into every interaction assuming that I’ll kick ass, and often I do.
