Today we’d like to introduce you to Maryann Swale.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Maryann. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Since as long as I can remember, I have always had a passion for aesthetics. I pursued my first college degree in fine arts where I learned to hone my artistic eye in a wide variety of media. I started with metal sculptures and some woodworking, but it wasn’t until years later that I turned my sights on utilizing my artistic passion in interior design. My diverse background in art and a more traditional course of study in business enabled me to take the plunge in starting my own interior decorating and design business, which has enabled me to work on a wide array of exciting projects.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My interior design business has not always been a smooth path. In fact, nearly every project inevitably runs into challenges with managing budget and timeline as well as my clients’ expectations. It is not always easy working with a diverse array of clients and tradespeople – especially as a young woman, I have found that it is best to clearly voice decisions confidently and without hesitation.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Swell Creations & Design – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I love all varieties and styles of interior design, but I pride myself most on working with mid-century modern, contemporary, and minimalist designs. I am also eager to take on full renovations whenever possible – it has always been a strength of mine to view a space as a clean slate which gives way to some truly stunning projects.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
My business would be nothing without the relationships I have cultivated with my tradespeople, realtors and, of course, my clients. The hardest steps are always the first – I have found success in initiating contact through a variety of internet forums, networking events, and word of mouth. In all cases, it is best to start with a face-to-face meeting and an optimistic attitude.
