Life and Work with Meg O’Donnell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg O’Donnell.

Meg, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I love hand-writing. I mean really love it! Pens are on my Christmas list, I enjoy filling out forms at the doctor’s office, and I still sign my full name on receipts. I was the student who liked taking notes and never got in trouble for a name-less assignment. As a teacher, I enjoy writing learning targets on the board and love to label all of my student’s school supplies. My calligraphy interests first sprouted when a coworker complimented a lettering doodle I made during a staff meeting and later asked if I would create her wedding signs. I jumped at the chance and, although a bit clumsy initially, the experience sparked a feeling of accomplishment for my creativity. I wanted more and began striving to level up in the craft through reading, watching videos, and practice, practice, practice! My lettering and calligraphy-based Etsy shop followed in February 2018 and I am so thankful for my newfound passion.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The challenges are inevitable, but I am intentional about taking things slow, continuing to learn, and believe the business side will come. Pricing a piece of your work can be a challenge, but you learn to hone in on your gut feeling and land at a comfortable spot. Also, the initial thought of opening an online shop was scary, but it has been so rewarding! I am passionate about lettering and calligraphy and plan to keep it that way by valuing a balance between teaching, calligraphy, and life. I don’t pressure myself to hit certain numbers and feel fortunate to be able to just enjoy the growth process. My advice is to find some cheerleaders among your friends and family and then just jump in!

Please tell us about Sunshine Designs by MOD.
Creating hand-lettered, digital prints for the online shop is my current specialty. It is so satisfying to see all the positive customer feedback with pieces pictured in their homes. I enjoy dipping my toes into the wedding market: addressing invitations, lettering wedding day signs, and helping brides find the perfect day-of paper products. What I’m most proud of is finding something I love to do, while still maintaining a low-stress lifestyle.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
My biggest barrier has been myself, both through self-doubt and lacking confidence. I believe this resonates with many women as we are often our own worst critics. I try to focus only on the positive!
