Life and Work with Mia Gorrell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Gorrell. Mia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. I’ve always been obsessed with photographs. My walls growing up were covered with images I loved, which I found in storage boxes in my basement. I especially love looking through vintage photographs in antique stores, always curious about their story and who they once belonged to. So, when I enrolled in a photography class during high school, I naturally fell in love with film and the darkroom. It wasn’t until I had my first child that I picked up a digital camera and played around with the settings and lighting. Over the last 5-6 years, it has taken an immeasurable number of hours practicing with my camera and editing software to find my style and feel confident in what I produce. I am constantly learning and experimenting to fuel my fire. I recently decided to specialize in intimate motherhood sessions, which include maternity and the “4th trimester” (birth-3 months). Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome? I feel like it was smooth in the sense that my transition into becoming a photographer felt natural like I was meant to do it. But starting my own business and being successful wasn’t always smooth. There have been many times when I felt discouraged, but when I remember how it makes me feel, I’m brought back up again. My advice for other aspiring photographers is to try everything. You’re not going to know what you love to create until you do it, and once you find what inspires you, focus on that and don’t let go. And my other piece of advice would be to never, ever compare yourself to others, because not only are you meant to be different, but trying to be like someone else will never bring you joy. Please tell us about Mia Gorrell Photography. I am a lifestyle photographer that specializes in intimate motherhood sessions. I love to capture a woman’s journey from self to mother, and that connection between herself and her child. I know from personal experience that some days seem neverending, but all of a sudden, a year flies by and those moments with little babies are gone. As mothers, we are so incredibly selfless, and our bodies endure so much to sustain another life. I find it all so inspiring and fascinating, and I want to document that for women to remind them of how strong they are. Documenting a chapter of people’s lives is an honor, and I am always thankful to be part of their story. Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using? I have recently started listening to audiobooks, which I love to do while I edit. My recent favorite is Mommy Burnout by Sheryl Ziegler. I also really like the podcast Motherhood Sessions led by Dr. Alexandra Sacks. I am a mother of four young children, so really related to these two resources in particular. Another podcast I enjoy is The Beginner Photography Podcast because there are some very inspirational photographers speaking. Pricing:

  • Coming Home: $595
  • Family: $495
  • Mama to Be: $495
