Life & Work with R A R E B Y R D $

Today we’d like to introduce you to R A R E B Y R D $.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We met at a TITWRENCH Surfacing show in June 2015. We hit it off in the parking lot, loading in. We exchanged numbers and started romping the Denver Metro area with a mobile studio. We recorded in closets, either at our cribs or our critter watching house-sitting gigs. We would show up at our friend’s houses and start recording or we just kick it and make beats in our headphones at coffee shops. Then we played TITWRENCH Fest in the fall of 2015 as Key-Lady and The Front Strangers. That’s where we met so many top-notch people to collaborate with. We exchanged info and ideas with many folks that night. That’s how we got our first show as the R A R E B Y R D $ in Fort Collins with Qbala and Brother Saturn.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like anything worth doing, it is never easy. Which to us, didn’t & doesn’t matter because our motto is: M.O.E. Music Over Everything. Most of our struggles have been “fitting in” to any specific genre or space. We have one of the most unorthodox and authentic setups, as well as our methods of recording and performing so with that comes resistance & confusion. We have never adhered to an “industry” standard so given that, earning respect has been a challenging road. At the end of the day, we wouldn’t change the path we’ve taken and are currently taking. We enjoy the challenge of making people think about what they’re consuming. It gives us fulfillment and knowledge that we are doing our Earth duty.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are master collaborators. We make our own beats. We record ourselves and engineer and produce for each other as well as others. We use computers. We use synths, we use violas, saxophones, voices, whatever instruments we can get our hands in the moment to make noise and sound and music. We teach people of all ages, shapes, flavors, and sizes how to record, how to make beats, and how the signal flow works. When we play live, we add a Percussionist, Mikey Blomquist to our digital works and give that new with the old rhythms to make bodies move, believe and remember. What sets us apart from others is our beats, fashion and women.
