Life and Work with Sarabeth Dennis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarabeth Dennis.

Sarabeth, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Both my Grandmother and her sister were hairstylists. So it definitely runs in the family. I decided to move to Los Angeles in 2002 to pursue my career in hairstyling. I landed in Santa Monica and started cosmetology school. After I graduated, I moved back to Denver and it’s been nonstop hair ever since. I’ve worked at some of the top salons in Denver while continuing my ongoing education around the country.

After doing hair for 16 years, I decided it was time to open my own salon Sister B’s Boutique Salon. Upscale luxurious salon offering the most exclusive products. We specialize in Blondes, Redheads, brunettes, balayage and beautiful natural lived in Color. We are a brand new salon that just opened in January.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely has not been a smooth road. Life is hard and full of struggles for most everyone. Just trust your gut, make smart choices and keep good company. Surround yourself with people that inspire you and challenge you. Any opportunity for education takes it! Most definitely have a mentor. Learn from your mistakes and move on. Most importantly, remember your vision and never give up on your dreams.

Please tell us about Sister B’s Boutique Salon.
I’m a hairstylist in Denver for over 16 years and a color specialist. I’ve done several apprenticeships and many countless hours of continued education in L.A., New York, Chicago, etc. Most of my clientele are blondes! But also Lots of redheads and brunettes. I love long hair and that shag cuts are so hot! My Niche is gorgeous lived-in color that grows out beautifully for months between their color appointments.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I don’t feel that there are too many barriers to female leadership as much as there has been in the past. Every day, more and more female leadership is emerging in every industry and especially cosmetology which seems is predominantly female lead. In the hair industry, there has definitely been a shift of camaraderie. With the gift of social media, I have definitely noticed that stylists and the salon Owners cheer each other on and reach out to one another for support and advice. I’ve had women in other states that I’ve never even met that have helped me so much in the journey of opening up the salon. I hope to meet them in real life someday!
