Life and Work with Savahanna Torres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Savahanna Torres.

Savahanna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hi! I’m Savahanna with Savahanna’s Photography. I’m currently raising five children and work at a non-profit cancer center. Life for me is adventurous and fun. If I’m not at sports events or taking care of patients. Then, I am out and about with clients capturing their memorable moments.

I started my passion for photography when I was about 16 years old. I knew one day, I would want to travel the world and take beautiful pictures. I spent countless hours looking through magazines at pictures. That’s when I decided I wanted to be a professional photographer. I soon started taking pictures of my family and friends. I loved seeing their reactions. I started booking more photo sessions with the focus to help the community. I want everyone around me to have memories to last them a lifetime. I want people to be able to look back and remember the moment they knew they loved that special someone, or the biggest event of their lives, a wedding, a new baby, their children growing. Whatever it may be that is special to them. I want to be the one to capture that moment. I currently book photo sessions of all types. My business is mostly mobile so it helps when clients want that lifestyle feel to their portraits, or when a new mom would rather the session take place in the comfort of their home.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business was not easy there was many obstacles in the beginning. I had nothing at first, I slowly bought things here and there, I was juggling working full time and starting a business as well as caring for my kids. I maneuvered over these obstacles within time. I remembered, in the beginning, I was burned on a photoshoot I was out the money that I put into the shoot. I was out the time it took and I was out the money from my client. I was devastated. How could anyone have done this to someone? Why? I turned this devastating moment into a learning experience. I sat down the thought of better strategies on how I can improve this from happening again. Every obstacle that I came across I learned from it I kept my dream close and worked hard.

If I was to give any advice to young women who are starting out, I would tell them to have a dream, make a plan and work hard. No matter how hard things get work harder. In a man’s world, us women need to make ourselves known. Work on strategies that works for your journey. Most of all never give up.

Who have you been inspired by?
I’ve come from strong women in my life. The first woman is my belated grandmother she was a strong independent woman who raised 15 kids all on her own. She was selfless, she cared not only for her children but for her community around her. She would wake up early head into work, after working an 8-hour shift, she would still make time to make meals for people who were in need. She would personally deliver them. Growing up, I knew I wanted to be just like her an inspiration that younger generations can look up to.

The second woman in my life is my mom. She inspired me to continue to follow my dreams. I remember her always telling me that no dream is too small. As long as I dreamt of it, I can do it. She worked hard for me and my brothers always there to guide us and show us what life is all about. When I first told her I wanted to be a photographer she said: “I knew one day you would be an artist”. She has been supportive throughout my journey.
