Today we’d like to introduce you to Skylar Drake.
Skylar, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I became a licensed Realtor in 2017, which was my gateway to entrepreneurship. I had become interested in the field for two reasons—freedom, and the ability to support others. The idea of being my own boss (and finding my own ways to utilize degrees in Gender Studies and Sociology, which are by no means pre-professional) compelled me to begin working for myself full time and, in some really profound ways, bet on myself. It’s not easy being solely responsible for your own success, but taking ownership of my life that way was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It catalyzed endless expansion in my life and gave me the room and motivation to do brave and different things. About one year into building my real estate business, I branched out into life coaching, and later added growth-centered Tarot card readings to my business offerings. My philosophy in business is to do what brings you joy, serve your community in the ways you feel called to, and be bold enough to do what no one else is doing.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I find it hard to imagine that entrepreneurship is smooth for anyone who has not taken that leap before. For me, there have been so many bumps and squeezes and serious hurdles along the way, and all of them made me so uncomfortable that I had to significantly increase the size of my comfort zone. I’ve done some deep personal work to overcome the largest of these challenges, which have been things like my mindset, my sense of self, my willingness to sacrifice who I’ve been to become who I want to be, and of course, my fear of failure—that constant, lingering sense that if I stop working, I could lose it all. Ultimately, the subtlety and impact of these obstacles is what drew me to begin work as a life coach alongside my real estate career. Our thoughts really do shape our reality, and being willing to challenge and reshape your thoughts and habituated actions can have the most beautiful ripple effect into every aspect of your life. The advice I would give another woman just starting her journey in business would be twofold: First, trust your own unique instincts and follow what gives you joy. Second, be willing to do things you have never done to get somewhere that you have never been.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Nowadays, my work feels like a kaleidoscope of services that all bring me joy and allow me to serve in some very different capacities. I think, in many ways, this is a key aspect of what sets me apart. As a Tarot reader and coach, I have the privilege of supporting my clients and community on a deep interpersonal level. This translates to my real estate career because my clients are usually individuals who are looking for a high degree of empathetic support, education, accessibility, and relatability throughout their transactions. I work with many first-time homebuyers for this reason. Those who know me as a coach or Tarot reader also know me as a Realtor, and vice versa, and in every setting, I am still Skylar. I am heart-focused, dedicated, intelligent and insightful, and wholly committed to providing my clients with the very best I have to offer. What I’m most proud of is the fact that I have found the bravery and boldness to occupy this gray space as a business, to do more than one thing, and to let my unique strengths and passions be the driving force behind every service I offer and every business I run.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
There are so many hard-won lessons and pieces of advice that I would like to give any woman considering an entrepreneurial path. Wherever you start your journey, whatever your business, someone will be there telling you what you need to do to be successful. Oftentimes, they are wrong. You alone know what inspires you, what brings you joy, what you can do better than anyone else, and what style of business will make you happy enough to work as hard as you need to. Similarly, you alone hold the knowledge of your limitations—what habits and beliefs are holding you back, what you are afraid of, what will stop you. Trusting yourself is paramount, and as a woman in business, you will be doubted. Don’t fall into the trap of doubting yourself. Take up space, live your truth, and run your business in all the ways that you know will make your heart happy.
