Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Bosshart.
Sydney, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a Colorado native and have began my hospitality career as a teenager working in food and beverage. My first full-time job was actually at Hooters… I’m sure that made my parents really proud. Then I ran away from the winter for a while living in Hawaii, Arizona, and Las Vegas through my college years working in various restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. After graduating from UNLV with a bachelors in hospitality, majoring in meetings and events management, I moved home to Colorado, where I met my amazing husband. I tried the 9-5 world for a moment as an executive administrative assistant and quickly realized that was not the life for me. I’m truly passionate about hospitality, while I love food and beverage long term I’m most drawn to the events world because no two days are ever the same, and it gives so much opportunity to be creative. I started the transition into weddings and events by working for offsite catering companies and event venues. In the past several years, I have helped plan and execute hundreds of events from private dinner parties to food truck weddings and charity golf tournaments to high-end black-tie galas.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth is probably not the adjective I would use… it has been an interesting journey to say the least. I’m pretty spontaneous which has created some chaos, jumping headfirst into things without thinking them through fully, but it’s never been boring. Mostly I would say my biggest obstacle has always been myself in one way or another.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Syd Boss Events & Adventures – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
After the last several years of executing other peoples vision, I decided to take the leap into entrepreneurship this past spring. I really want to go beyond execution and be involved in the entire creative and planning process. My company is very much in its infancy stage and I am happy to take my time and build this thing right. This season I’ve been working with several female-led companies and am excited to have some awesome women to look to for support in my entrepreneurship journey. I had my first official wedding under my business in June and am currently working on some corporate holiday events and am super excited about taking 2020 by storm!
I am also very passionate about travel and dreamed of being a flight attendant as a child…then I got a dog at 19 so that never happened. While on a trip to Europe last year, I started to dream again about how I could make travel a more regular reality and looked into jobs with travel perks similar to working for an airline. I learned about host travel agencies and how independent agents worked. More recently while building my business plan, I was thinking about things like how to set myself apart from other local planners and add value to potential clients, or if there were additional services that would help generate revenue in off-season or convert one-time wedding clients into repeat business. I just kept coming back to travel, it answers all of these questions. I do not consider myself a very savvy saleswoman but I wholeheartedly believe in investing in experiences rather than things so it just makes so much sense to sell something I believe in. A few months ago, I joined a host agency with the intention to specialize in destination weddings and romance travel. I have spent these last few months educating myself in the travel industry. I have achieved several certifications through different travel providers and destination management companies. I look forward to planning exotic getaways for my clients and myself!
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think women are well suited to do just about anything if we would just get out of our own way.
