Life and Work with Venus Howard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Venus Howard.

Venus, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2001, I worked for a telecommunications company and was having a house built. I had received notice that I was being laid off and had to terminate my contract to purchase my home. The agent I was working with was a Broker and asked if I had ever considered a career in Real Estate, which I had when my son was an infant. That quickly transpired into what has become my 18-year career.

In the beginning, it’s all about getting as much education as you can. Business growth isn’t always easy but with persistence and dedication, you can achieve so much more. I’ve moved companies a few times, but have found my home with REMAX and lead a top team and truly love serving our clients at a high level.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was not. I went through a divorce, being a single parent and had to work ‘other jobs’ early in my career. I also became the BPO Queen for about seven years. Which meant I was the one who valued most of the homes in the short sale, foreclosure, loan modification market. I was able to use that to keep in the Real Estate industry in hard times. I didn’t know how to be a business owner. I struggled a lot for many years. When I decided to invest in myself and really make this a career, I got a business coach and ‘went to work’ every day. You have to be adaptable to each market and know your customer.

Please tell us about your work.
I sell residential real estate, but one of my motto’s is “I sell homes and do good things” I’m always working on SOME project. Right now we are renovating part of a homeless shelter in Brighton, Colorado. In the fall, I will be collecting socks for the homeless. I’m pretty known in my community for always doing something to give back.

Aside from that, I market my homes that I’m selling at a top-level. We do a lot of video marketing with set us apart from the average agent who will put the home on the market, a sign in the yard and hope it will sell. We actively promote our listings and work hard to ensure we exceed our client expectations.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think women have as much opportunity as men, but we have the challenge of our emotions and mindset. I truly believe that any woman can be and do anything they choose, so long as the mindset is there. Women have the opportunity, especially now in this time of our life to be top business owners and go-givers more than any other times in history. We just have to find that self-belief first.
