Today we’d like to introduce you to James Carnes.
Hi James, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Finding Neverland was a band started back in 2011, and I (James Carnes) was friends with the members. Grew up with the former vocalist. In 2015 they took a hiatus, and in 2019 they asked me to take over on vocals.
I have been interested in music but never really tried until the opportunity to join FN. I’ve been pursuing a football career for most of my life, and after I tried out for CU-Boulder and did not make it, I began to try music more and the passion got stirred in me more and more. While at CU-Boulder I was struggling with an addiction to alcohol and drugs, and music began to be an escape from the troubles in my life. We play music for the glory of the God of Israel, and we play and write music to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Music-wise, it’s been a learning experience since I haven’t grown up playing music. I grew up playing football. But my grandfather was a famous professional musician, so I have found a passion and some natural talent in vocals. Right now we only have two songs with my vocals.
Personally, my life has been a struggle with addiction. Currently, I am almost two years sober thanks to the grace of God, and I just graduated with a degree from. CU- Boulder last month, but pursuing football was an up and down road that is a long story, but I feel like music might be the real skillset that could propel my life, and continue to live out my purpose in knowing God and helping others know Him.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the frontman vocalist for the Christian metalcore band Finding Neverland from Denver, CO. The band originally started out in Colorado Springs in 2011. We play and write music to glorify God in a unique genre known as metalcore. Most metalcore bands are associated with secularism or satanism and atheism, so it’s unique to play this style of music for Christianity. Many people might not understand but we think it’s a way to continue to play the style of music we love, and also do it for the glory of God.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I was born in Colorado Springs, but I lived with an Aunt and Uncle in Seguin, TX and those are probably my favorite childhood memories. Playing outside and doing fun things like going to the Alamo or learning how to play sports better. Also, playing Pee Wee football in Colorado Springs and just playing sports outside with my friends is my favorite memories.
