Life & Work with Jen Roby of Aspen, CO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Roby.

Hi Jen, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started in corporate digital design, but in 2017 I opened a small Etsy poster shop on the side. A 14ers infographic I made took off locally, and that momentum pushed me into more Colorado-inspired work. After a mountain bike accident, I left the comfort of my 9–5 and shifted into full-time art, exploring new mediums. I began with watercolor and acrylic, but quickly discovered a love for texture and abstract landscapes. I’m constantly experimenting, and I’m excited to see where the next year takes my work.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
People often imagine an artist’s life as nonstop creativity, but that’s maybe ten percent of the job. The rest is long stretches of admin, organization, and the kind of work that can make it hard to stay connected to passion and purpose. My biggest hurdle came when I tried to grow my art career while designing out of a van I lived in for more than two years.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m best known for my Colorado 14ers poster and a series of mountain infographics, but my proudest work is my large-scale textured murals, some stretching two stories tall. What makes my work different is that I’m an outdoor field artist—everything I create comes directly from actual time spent exploring Colorado’s backcountry.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I lived in Denver for more than five years, and I still miss the food, culture, and the mix of transplants that make the city so vibrant. I’ve lived in several downtown neighborhoods, and while I love the energy, it’s clear the city is still struggling with housing and mental-health challenges—issues that feel even more visible in such a dense, compact space.
