Life & Work with Jessica Cook

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Cook.

Jessica Cook

Hi Jessica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started several years ago when my husband and I were newlyweds. Our families joined together for our first Easter celebration and I was in charge of decorating the table. I wanted to make it beautiful with a floral centerpiece so made a trip to our local grocery store. I scurried around looking for the perfect arrangement but couldn’t find anything that was in my price range that didn’t look like it had been quickly stuffed into a vase.

Therefore, I took matters into my own hands and decided to give professional floral arranging a try. I managed to find a beautiful bouquet of Spring flowers for $35 went home and got to work. Having no idea what I was doing, I Googled “How to put a floral arrangement together” and found some great tips.

Apparently, I did a great job because I received multiple compliments from family members and was encouraged to open my own business, which I thought was a joke at the time. I enjoyed making the Easter arrangement so much that I started making centerpieces and decorations for other family holiday get-togethers and birthday celebrations. Because I already had 20 years of hospitality and event experience under my belt, I decided to turn my passion into a business and launched Blessings in Bloom, LLC.

As a passionate and talented designer, I believe in creating extraordinary designs that will leave a long-lasting impression on my clients and guests. Whether needing stunning floral arrangements or assistance planning a wedding, birthday celebration, or corporate event, I work hard to make every occasion unforgettable. Launching my own business was one of the best risks I ever took and I get so much joy from blessing others with my talent and creativity. I absolutely love what I do and have found my calling in life!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No. One of the things that is keeping me from expanding my business is the lack of space. When we first got married, we moved into an apartment with the hopes of only being there for a couple of years. Unfortunately, when Covid-19 hit, the housing market blew up making it impossible to afford a house. Since I was right in the middle of establishing my business, we had to turn our patio into a mini floral/event studio, making it extremely difficult to work in because of the space.

I didn’t have enough space to store all my supplies, so ended up having to rent another storage unit on top of the other one we had for all of our extra stuff. Until we get into a house, I can’t expand my business. Therefore, I can’t leave my normal 8-5 pm job quite yet. If my prayers are answered, we’ll be in a house in no time with more storage and space.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a small florist and event planner based in Colorado Springs. I am unique in that I only provide services for events that have 60 guests or less because I care about the quality of my services. I limit the number of clients I take on at the same time so I can focus all my attention on that special event. I specialize in floral design for events and hotels and offer event planning services, including day-of-event coordination.

This means that if a client wants to plan the event but doesn’t want to be in charge of coordinating the event the day of, they can leave that up to me! Also, with over 20 years working in the hospitality and event industry, I have been involved in staging thousands of events and feel confident in my ability to put on a successful event.

What’s next?
On top of moving into a house and growing my business, my husband and I are expanding our family and are currently in the adoption process. A huge reason why I opened my business is so that I can eventually walk away from the typical 8-5 pm job so I have more flexibility in my schedule and can be a stay-at-home mom. I long for the days when I can create my own schedule and take time off when I want to.
