Meet Aaron Varcasio of Smooth Rowing in Littleton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Varcasio.

Aaron, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Being originally from Upstate NY, you could consider me a water person. I have been involved with the sport of rowing since 1997.

I started as an athlete in high school and continued through college and post-college.

Once I entered the job force, I was interested in being a coach. So, I attained the basic’s, NASM – CPT, and for the sport of rowing US Rowing Level 2. I have sense acquired roughly 10 more. I first started my Crew Coaching Career at BHRA (My alumna mater, high school team). Then, I eventually moved to be an Adult Crew Coach at Albany Rowing, my next and last on the water was with Rocky Mountain Rowing Club. (I miss it)

Not to mention: When I was going to school at Curry College, I was missing the sport of rowing. So what did I do? I actually starting the Curry College Crew Club and myself and eight others were able to join the Community Rowing Inc. Rowing Club in Boston!

Then, I had the desire to move from New York to Colorado, there aren’t a lot of rowing clubs or body’s of water in CO. But there are Concept 2 Rowing machines!

When I moved to Colorado, I dove into the fitness industry; as a Personal Trainer, CrossFit Coach, and worked at GNC. Being a new entrepreneur, an idea sprung into my head. Why don’t I run my own company?! With this company, I could do a dual mission; Concept 2 maintenance and seminars. Time to do some research and develop a name!

This business venture has been a part-time business for me: I still work full time with a separate company and operate this business when I’m not there.

2013: Smooth Rowing was born!
With this company, I personally am the Owner/Founder/Coach/Marketer/Biller/Maintenance tech
I reach out to gym’s in my area (Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs), mainly CrossFit Affiliates, because they carry a plethora of Concept 2 Rowing Machines.

With this business, I conduct a deep cleaning of the Rower and install/order new parts if needed.
Also, work along with gyms that would like to host my Smooth Rowing Seminar. We pick a date and time, I get registration and marketing set up. The seminars are 90 mins to 120 min, and very affordable.

2019 and beyond: I’d like to run more Seminars in CF Affiliates, Orange-theory FItness, and Row House. Also, to build more of a presence on youtube to educate others.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been obstacles along the way sure:
I have a full-time job, extracurricular activities, and a family that I love and adore!

So, after a day at my other job, I come back and answer email’s, texts, etc. Also, I need to stay on top of social media to please my audience and keep them entertained and interested.

Am I glad that I started this company, of course! There is a market for it and I am here to help my community!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Smooth Rowing story. Tell us more about the business.
This is a service and education business. I provide a service to repair and clean rowers in the Colorado Market (If a neighboring state would like my services, lets chat!) I also instruct a beginner/intermediate Indoor Rowing Machine course. The course is programmed by me. When teaching it I set up the C2 Rowers in a parallel row so I can walk around and critique form and give positive feedback. I also have a Rower set up on Boxes (Box Jumps) in the front to that all athletes can have a vantage point.

I am very proud of my company because it is my brainchild. I work for what I get, if I want business I need to get it, though, over the years, I have helped many gyms so they contact me every six months for a service call.

The part that sets me apart from others is a personal touch, I build a long-lasting rapport with the gyms that I service or instruct seminars at. There truly aren’t many companies that only work on Concept2 Rowers either. If there are they charge much more.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
It’s is about retention and relationships. In this business/industry, it’s all about relationships. If I am about to acquire long-lasting relationships with nearby gyms then my future as a business owner is profitable and long-lasting.
