Today we’d like to introduce you to Aco Nasa.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Aco. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
To start off, I’m sure everybody wants to know where the name “Aco Nasa” comes from! Well the “Aco” part is short slang for Aurora, Colorado & the “Nasa” part basically came from a joke that a friend said & it meant since I’m big on Weed & always smoking might as well name him“Nasa” because I’m always high like their rockets!!!! I loved the idea, so I kept it but spiced it up so then Came “Aco Nasa”.
My real name is Mark Gibson I originally was born in Kansas City, KS. When I was three months old, my mom moved me and my big brother to Aurora, Colorado to be with my Grandpa side of the family. We traveled back and forth growing up just because family was split in both states, but I spent the majority of my life growing up in Colorado.
I always played sports growing up. My favorite is football. With that being said, I have had many, many NFL dreams that didn’t come true. But that doesn’t mean I wasn’t focused on getting there. Even in middle school, I was focused on building my game as an NFL Athlete, so I was highly upset when my mom forced me into an after school program for music, which is where my first interest in any type of music was created. Even though at the moment I didn’t stick with it, I always had the feeling deep down that I was passionate about music just because of the power it has behind it & how you can express yourself in raw form, then paint the visual you want the Audience to get in a Video.
Fast Forward to my graduating class of “2009” from Aurora Central High School then heading off to Coffeyville, KS to play football because like I mentioned before, I had Aspirations of being an NFL legend. As the saying goes… “life happens” actually the biggest blessing of my life happened… My son “Javaon” was Born on July 27, 2011. What a beautiful blessing from Jesus Christ. But naturally, it puts my “NFL” dreams on hold because now I have to learn how to be a father & Provide for my child. Life for me goes on as I figure out how to be the best father I can & still providing for my son,at the same time still thinking about those NFL dreams. Yet, I’m surrounded by pretty much all of my cousins who had always been into rap & just Spitting some freestyles.
This influence of being around those guys constantly rapping & encouraging me to rap, even though they knew I wasn’t into rapping & just sucked at it, plus the influence of my favorite rappers is one half of why I do music. The other half of why I make music is for starters I knew if I got good enough & learned the game/industry I can get rich & provide the life I never had for my son “Javaon” well that’s how it started out, but then it quickly turned into my passion & now I actually love music. I realized it was my therapy, & in a lot of ways saved me. It helps me tell my story of the pain & struggle.
I get to express myself the way I want without being judged because I’m used to growing up as a Young Black Male who isn’t supposed to have feelings, I also use my music in a big way to celebrate life simply because I’ve lost people that were close to me & I just like to bring awareness to how precious life is. So here I am doing music now Full Time (Not a hobby) passionate, building my name & growing my fan base. But I’m not signed to a label. I have no distribution deal this means I am 100% an Independent Recording Artist, this means everything that involves me I pay for. Independent Artist pays for things like Studio Time, Beats, Video Production Fees, Distribution of music, Ad’s, Dj Fees, Model Fees, Merch/OutFits, Photo Shoots, Cover Art, microphones, Speakers, Laptops etc. With all that being so costly & adding up, I’m very grateful about my job at “The Kind Room” because it allows me to fund my music career, which is my passion.
Speaking of Video Production Fees, I would like to give a Huge Shout out to Connor Mcneil aka @Camera.Master for so beautifully putting together my first official video, dedicated to my Grandma & the millions & millions of people out there that’s lost a loved one, wishing they would “Come Right Back” out on my YouTube Channel #AcoNasa.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road was never smooth. Just a couple of the struggles along the way ranged from not knowing where my next meal was coming from & sleeping in local parks, to going to jail & fighting custody battles for my son & having to be on probation. Struggles like not having lights on in the house, getting evicted having to go live in shelters. No food stamps. Maybe food banks form time to time. The most difficult challenge through it all was to figure out who I truly was through all the Drama & Moving around.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I’m in the music business. You can stream my music “Aco Nasa” on all platforms Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, etc. I’m known for being a Young Goat & dropping fire music lol honestly some fans will tell you in their eyes I’m a G.O.A.T already so who am I to tell a fan they are wrong?? plus you can’t go wrong when you play “Aco Nasa” out your speaker.
I’m most proud of my recent video, “Come Right Back” out now on my YouTube channel! Actually I love it, I can’t in words express how perfect the visual came together for what I was trying to portray to the audience (Go Check it out Like, Comment, Subscribe to my Channel #AcoNasa). What sets me apart from others is I’m always underestimated in everything, so It gives me an advantage because people aren’t worried about me.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like our city is the perfect place for my music to flourish because as a whole Colorado Hip-Hop/Rap scene is blowing up, so it’s like I have perfect timing with this music.
If someone was just starting out it would depend on what type of person they are & what they are used to being around for me to recommend them to start here, usually hip-hip/rap artist like scenes & cultures like Atlanta or New York because the culture is so welcoming & loving & supporting towards your music career if you choose to do that. Places like Colorado (yes here in the city) the culture is more every man for himself Versus creating a platform so the whole world can see that we actually have talent here.
The things our city can do to improve is simply start supporting more local rappers. Come to open mics, share a post, Stream a single, tag a friend on anything music-wise Of local artist. We just have to come together. It starts with support! (Support your local Rappers like you do your favorite).
