Meet Adam Courchaine of NuMed Direct Primary Care in Centennial, Southglenn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Courchaine.

Adam, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a Physician Assistant (PA) and founder of NuMed Direct Primary Care. I graduated with honors from UMASS Amherst in 1995 with a BS in Exercise Science and began my career as an Exercise Physiologist. I then went to work as a Pulmonary Technologist at Boston Children’s Hospital, where I was exposed to the diversity of the medical field. This sparked a fire in me to learn more about the human experience! I continued my education at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) and graduated in 2006 with honors for Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS).

My medical career has allowed me to work in Internal Medicine/Primary Care, Pediatrics, Geriatrics and Urgent Care. In 2012, I joined the Army National Guard as a PA. In 2015, my family and I moved to Colorado for more life experiences. I deployed to the Middle East in 2017 and now serve in an Aviation Battalion.

My passion and belief is that nutrition, preventative health and lifestyle choices are key to a happy and youthful life. I find the changing healthcare scene in the U.S. over the past 15 years to be a struggle at times. More and more focus is being spent on inefficiently spending incredible amounts of money to please the insurance companies while patients are feeling more alienated than ever. Then I came across the DPC model! This has become a passion of mine and the reason he started NuMed Direct Primary Care.

In his free time he enjoys hiking, mountain biking, doing functional exercise programs and exploring the outdoors with his wife, son and daughter, and their four dogs.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Resigning a full-time job in urgent care to start a small business was not at all easy! There were a few times when I doubted the path and considered throwing in the towel. Those times lasted for about 1 minute. When I think of what direct primary care can do for patients’ health, happiness and sense of wellness, and this country, I know this is answer. I have no options other than 100% success.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the NuMed Direct Primary Care story. Tell us more about the business.
Direct primary care (DPC) is a model of medicine that does not accept insurance. Why do we even have insurance? The answer is to cover for unanticipated situations that we cannot possibly afford. When the house burns down, we use insurance. We cars crash, we use insurance. When we want new blinds in the kitchen… we use freedom to buy them or not. When we need an oil change, same thing. For our health we’ve been convinced that insurance should magically cover all the “little” things… physicals, colds, aches, etc. We’ve been sold that idea since the 1980’s. All for free! You and I know that’s so far from the truth. Over the past 30 years, we’ve seen premiums, deductibles and copays go through the roof, all the while our medical care and sense of personal attention have gone in the toilet. This is surely not “health” insurance, it is sick insurance.

NuMed DPC says enough of that! Instead of 80% overhead of traditional insurance-based practices, I keep it at 10-20% overhead. The average face-to-face time with your provider is 7-8 minutes. I schedule 30-60 minutes. Instead of 25 patients a day, I see up to 5-8 patients daily. Can you call/text/email your provider? With NuMed DPC you get my mobile number. I get my patients medications/labs/imaging at about 90% discounts. My goal is not to feed the insurance meter, I honestly want you to maximize your potential and stop being afraid of your health.

This is a veteran owned and family-operated local business. Yes, my wife, Dara, is a Registered Nurse!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am not sure if it is luck or destiny? Both? I have the incredible good fortune of working in a field with such a desperate need for overhaul. The timing is perfect as we all are so frustrated and sick of being… sick. We need to wake up and believe that our existence is not simply to refill medications at a pharmacy. This direct primary care model brings us back to a time when we saw a healer/practitioner who focused on our needs and guided us to a healthier life, and not one that simply answers to an administrator of sick insurance plans.
